I'm thinking of using SD's epoxy finishing "method" on a stock. Just curious at to whether or not it can be checkered without having to replace a stockmaker's checkering tools

I have repointed a used stock after epoxy sealer. The dirt in the bottom of the valleys mixs with the epoxy ,both dulling the checkering tool and sending them off line.

I checkered this stock over 2 coats of an expoxy finish: It checkered far easier than any @#$%^&* Laminated stock!. You should have any problems associated with the finish...............DJ

I'm thinking of using SD's epoxy finishing "method" on a stock. Just curious at to whether or not it can be checkered without having to replace a stockmaker's checkering tools While I do not do checkering, I know that the lady I use for that task (Sherry Abraham) advises that she wants the stock checkered before the finish goes on.

Depending on what kind of finish and how you are applying it, that can cause allot of problems and headaches.

i have used sherry abraham and she is like everyone else i have used, in that they want the stock finished before it is sent to them for checkering. in fact sherry gives very detailed instructions on packing the stock so the finish isn't damaged by the packing material.

Casey Thanks, Here's what it looked like after I inletting the action and added the forend tip and ebony blank for the grip cap inlay: After getting some good input from campfire members and others I reshaped the forend tip from the other picture, also Steven Dodd Hughes reminded me that I forgot a loading shelf and gave me a couple other good ideas for the next project. Here's what she looks like now: I'm still learning but working on them is fun.................DJ

Naw,tung oil finishes I have used weren't a problem repointing at all.I passed some epoxy on to a gunsmith friend and he said the checkering was easier on an epoxy finish.

karnis You will have no problems checkering due to epoxy. Checkering tools are cheap enough that tossing them at any indication of dulling is automatic, but many panels can be done with a single set of cutters.
Checkering is always done after finishing. art
