I know this has been covered before but I searched and couldn't come up with an answer. What would the estimated weight of the following? Rem 700LA ADL pre-wart Shilen barrel (Rem standard contour as sold in Brownells) in 7mm at 24". How much weight can you cut in shortening a barrel like this? Ti Take off stock std. Redfield rings. I would like to get this package at 7lbs max.
Can you shorten the Ti foreend? Or do you end up with the wiskers? I am going to paint it myself (I know Rick's is better but I like doing as much myself) Dave

Dave, if you're going to shorten that barrel, do so from the chamber end. There's not much weight to be saved cutting off the muzzle end. Off the top of my head, I believe you'll save somewhat less than an ounce per inch, depending on contour, from the muzzle end.
You can shorten a Ti stock. Cut off the last inch to inch and a half, and save it. Then cut off the desired amount and epoxy the old tip back on. It saves you from having to re-shape the tip, you'll just need to blend it in.
If the 7lbs includes scope, I don't think you can get there with the components mentioned.

CAS, The barrel I had in mind is already threaded and short chambered although I could still have it shortened. I like the Remington contour. I am looking at 7lbs without scope. I am not interested in making it a super light just 7.75 or so scoped (13-15 oz scope). Dave

Dave, Just guessing here, but I would suspect that the barrel in question would go 40oz, give or take.
So: Action - 38.5oz Barrel - 40oz Stock - 26oz Mounts - 4oz
Total, you're looking at a bit under 7lbs sans scope. Your project is doable.

How much weight can you cut in shortening a barrel like this? Figure it out. Assume a cylinder that's the diameter of the muzzle, with a cylindrical hole through it the diameter of the bore. Figure pi (3.1415927) times r (the radius the radius) times the length of the cut-off stub for the volumes of the stub and the hole in cubic inches. Steel weighs about 0.283 to 0.284 pound per cubic inch. Somewhere around this midden that I live in, I have a two-inch stub off the muzzle of (IIRC) a .257 barrel. I weighed it many years ago no more than a couple of ounces, as well as I can recall. Certainly not much.

My .338/06 weighs 7.5# with a 6x42 Leupie and Talley LW rings. It is an ADL Long action with the bolt fluted and a #1200 contour LW barrel(like a #2 contour) at 21". It is sitting in a Ti take off stock. You shoulld be able to do your project with no problem.

Ken - I am fairly good in math but typing is easier especially when I didn't have the calculations and weights handy.
I figured that shortening the barrel for the sake of weight was not good, I like a minimum 23" for a normal caliber and prefer 24" and 25-26 for any magnum.
OK now where would the easiest cheapest area to lighten another 6-8oz without sacrificing 5 shoot groups. Lighter barrel I assume?
CAS - Jamison-Ken Thanks for the help. Dave

(I know: as Howell's First Law of Physics states, The load is always lighter when the other fellow totes it.)

Dave, Dan Lilja has a quick way to figure this out. Good luck with your project. Barrel weight calculations
