I've read '69 is when they started with the G but it's only something I read someplace.
According to George Madis in his dates of manufacture book the G serial numbers began in 1970. 1969 was the last year of the non letter.
while the book claims from 1849-1984 the model 70's only show in the book through 1982, so I'm unsure what happened after that.
