When it comes to detail, the quality of the glass can be more important than the magnification; not saying a spotter isn't useful, but, for example, very good 7X glass trumps lesser quality 10X when it comes to finding and studying details and needs less support structure. There is a balance between simple and necessary. Strive to overcome as much stuff as you can with well-developed skills - and that can include being practiced with glass or whatever too. Realize that most people going to a place they are not very familiar with will over-prepare in the "stuff" department.
