So should we believe his version of the gas station shootings, but not what he has said about Jesse?
Luttrell mentioned the gas station shootings in his book. I'll give him benefit of the doubt that he believed it to be true. But all that really matters about that fact is the question why would he make up or relate such an odd story if he had never heard it from Kyle? Answer: He wouldn't have. The guy was his buddy.
As for anything Luttrell says about Ventura. Well I'm sure he hates the guys guts and therefore I'd take anything he said with a huge grain of salt. Ever heard the phrase "motive to lie"?
