They're pretty similar and I wouldn't carry one for anything I wouldn't carry the other. That said, I bought a .243 Remington model 7 this summer and it has pretty much eliminated my desire to add a .250 savage to my arsenal. Both fill the same role in my eyes, excellent varmint/ deer cross over round, neither would be my choice for anything larger or tougher than black bears.
