Varmint: 3 disadvantages to truck camper are:
1. Wind resistence, especially side winds
2. Lack of storage
3. Breaking camp everyday to use truck
I mitigated these disadvantages by mounting an Alaskan Camper on a diesel F350 with a utility truck body from Skaug Truck Body Works in LA. I flat tow a Geo Tracker with manual transfer case and manual transmission or a Rokon during hunting season or a small fishing boat during non hunting months. My wife wishes we bought a Class B+ but I am happy. Checkout the thread on Expedition Portal of the Alaskan Camper build for ideas. I get 13 mpg fully loaded and 18 mpg lightly loaded.
