I have a 16' Crestliner Canadian that I use in the rivers and bays which currently has a POS Eagle fish finder and I'm looking for something a little more modern without breaking the bank. Cabela's has refurbished Lowrance Elite 5HDI Combo units for $250.00. Any experience? Decent deal? http://www.cabelas.com/product/Lowrancereg-Elite-5-HDI-Combo-ndash-Refurbished/2042303.uts

I bought my Lowrance HDS7 Gen 1 right after the Gen 2's came out for $500 CAD with the Navionics chip. The price doesn't seem to bad, but I am always wary of refurb electronics. Might depend on the warranty they provide, but it is usually shorter. What does a non-refurb go for in your area?

I and my fishing buddies all gave up on Lowrance as we never had one last a season.....return it and $$$$ for a new model each year and get another one that won't finish a one week fishing trip......Lowrance should have a hell of a lot of refurbished units.

I've had a pretty good experience with refurbished electronics, including a recently purchased Lowrance sonar unit from Cabela's. They way I look at it, a new unit may or may not have issues, but they should have gotten a refurbished unit to run right. So far, it's worked out well for me. But if you get one, make sure you keep your receipt. If you run into problems with the unit, even a year or two after purchase, it is still worth a fair amount on an exchange unit in a Cabela's store.

Wapati I have a new in box 5X color Lowrance I bought for my Ranger several years ago. Costs $500+ but would sell for $325 if your interested. Box, manual and all paper work...never been mounted. Heck of a finder. No GPS but can be added from the factory. Let me know if you're interested. You won't find a deal like this anywhere else. powdr

I have the same unit that my wife bought new for me this spring. It was right around $400, so $250 sounds pretty good, especially if there is still a warranty. I'm still learning to use the model, but am liking it so far. I wish I could afford the 7 series for the larger screen, but the 5 works well within it's limitations.
