Count me as another one who disdained AR's for a long time, and who still collects antiques. But eventually I came to enjoy working on/with AR's. They are much like the old muscle cars of the 60's & 70's; you can easily customize them to suit yourself. Run anything from .22LR, to .50 Beowulf on the same lower.

A semiauto is going to always be heavier than a light bolt gun running the same cartridge, and when hunting, the bolt gun may well prove to be handier. I have one AR that is the "house gun" for serious defensive use; but I have hunted it successfully, too.

Re: carrying

I've got two AR's. One heavy, accurate bastard use for predators and pigs. If I'm pig hunting im either carrying it because I'm stalking, or it's in my pack, magazine in my pants pocket. When I'm predator calling, it's on a single point skiing. Granted, when dragging a coyote out that does get cumbersome.

My other one is my shtf m4, and if I'm carrying it I'm either practicing, or I'll potentially need it quickly.

that they are heavy is a myth, why at 10 pounds 1 1/4 ounces with 10 rounds of WW 150 grain Power point ammo its like handling a good lightweight fly rod. smile

They don't have to be heavy unless you want them to be, or don't pay attention to weight when you're attaching all the extra doodads.

My 18" 308 is right at 9lb scoped with an empty mag, and could be lighter if I wasn't stuck on the full length ff forend. My lightest 223 was 7lb scoped, also with a free float forend.

A nice slim forend sure makes them nicer to carry too. The SSK series Midwest sells is slim enough to carry like dad's old 30/30.

Start with an AR and a thousand rounds for every shooter in the house, plus an extra AR.

After that, it's all a matter of preference.

I bought 2 boxes of 20 Federal Fusion 62 grain bullets and two of the 20 round PMags yesterday from Acadamy sports. I figure that is about all I will be able to shoot before being overwhelmed by the Zombie hoards. I don't think its going to be like this.....

I'll run with that. I have 3 uppers to build and two lowers. Powder will be another thing to buy. Can't have too much.

FYI heads up, got Selway to price match to DSG on mags and shipping.

Also, got an email today from GrabaGun for black 30 rd Pmags for $9.25/per, but can't open the link yet because commie liberal employer blocks wifi access to websites that MAY have gun info or sales.

Not stockpiling, but I'm really thinking about getting my 3-gun gear together before I have to worry.

Aero Ambi lower
JP-15 Upper
Sig P320
FN SLP Competition

I'll likely just get lower finished out and pick up enough AR/Sig hi cap mags that I won't have to worry this year. I don't figure the Sig or the shotgun will be in danger. Here's to hoping.

Yep, I grabbed a ten pack of 20s and 30s, like the 20 much better for shooting prone.

I just plunked down for a new upper, PSA had nickel boron bolt carriers for $99 and that is a steal so I grabbed two. Joebob outfitters had uppers for $39 so I got two of them also. Only one barrel though, AR-15 performance 18" 3 gun profile.

Agree that this is a good baseline
NOTE-if you have a fighting rifle (AK, M1, M1A, SKS, etc.) there is no need to buy another one. Just some ammo.
Also, if you have a Sidearm add 500 rounds for that
If you have a HD shotgun-500 rounds
This can be in place of all those ARs
Also, if you have a bolt action rifle in the same caliber as your fighting rifle that is helpful
The point being you may have most of what you need in the gun cabinet.
