I am trying to fix up a gun for my son in AK. He gave me the gun to do a glass bed job on , but the stock was cracked at the grip and rotten were the rear bolt tube was put in. I would like to find a good wood or synthetic stock if possible. Cal. is 7mm Mag and it has the large plastic lower unit.
Any help would be great.

I had the same rifle and was told any small ring Mauser stock will fit as long as you relieve it at the slide safety.

I shot the barrel out on my H-5000 and JES wouldn't rebore it to .338-06 like I wanted because they said Husqvarna steel doesn't cut nice. I was going to rebarrel but the stock split too and I realized the only thing that would be the same after I was done replacing things would be the action. And I liked the rifle the way it was. I liked the pencil barrel, I liked the iron sights on it, and I liked the schnabel foreend on the stock. I realized it wouldn't be the same so I sold it.

Pretty sure you meant Large Ring Mauser instead of Small. The stock screw spacing is closer on the small ring.

Well, the Husqvarna is a small ring. Maybe it fits a large ring stock but you would have to glass the gap in around the ring.

The H-5000 was the model name for the Husqvarna 1600 (HVA) series rifles imported by Tradewinds in SeaTac, Washington, in the 1960s. The HVA action is a small ring commercial 98-style action that Husqvarna built their CF rifles on during the 1950s and 1960s.

The HVA/1600 series actions are probably the most common small ring commercial Mauser-style actions found in the U.S.

To make things confusing, after Tradewinds lost their import agreement with Husqvarna, it went to S&W, they imported Krico rifles from West Germany and called them H-5000s also.

"The large plastic lower unit" that you ID'd sounds more like a Krico than a Husqvarna to me. The Kricos have a detachable magazine, while the HVAs have a metal, either alloy or steel, hinged floorplate assembly.

Every H5000 I've seen has alloy bottom metal. That is for Tradewinds and Smith&Wesson. I've never seen a Krico, they may be plastic.

The early H-5000 had steel BM, and they went to alloy later in production.

I know my 1963 H5000 had alloy bm.

So does my '65 H-5000. It was before that.

I sure like the slim lines of my Tradewinds Husky 5000's stock. Alloy bm here too.

Isn't there somewhat common stock breakage due to binding behind the tang? Or? Mine was basically NOS last year and IIRC I did some relieving because of something I read. Got a lil' Redfield 2-7 since this pic, just a good simple rig.

Yes, they all split at the tang. If anybody has a Husky that isn't already cracked you can prevent it. There is a metal collar inside the rear stock/trigger guard screw. Originally it was the same width as the wrist of the stock where it sits. Over time, the stock shrinks slightly and the tang and trigger guard bottom out on that collar. Either file the collar down so it's flush with the stock or remove it altogether and your stock won't crack.

I should mention that information came straight from SBHVA on the Swedish rifle forum on Gunboards. He was also a member here. He was a Swede and an expert on these rifles. I picked his brain a lot about Huskies.

Alloy bottom metal was introduced circa 220001 serial, mid 1957.

You are correct, the BM is Allow, feels smooth almost like plastic though.
I will try to pick up a small ring Mauser stock and give it a try.

Try one first. You either need the small ring stock or you need the large ring stockand need to glass in around the ring. I can't remember which but it's all about the screw spacing. Maybe you can find the measurements on a google search. Either way you have to inlet for the side safety.

Screw spacing is the same as a large ring - easiest way is to glass into a large ring stock.

You can pretty much use any 98 stock but the factory bottom metal needs fitting not quite the same as a 98 bottom metal.

Spacing on screws is 7 7/8 same as a large ring 98.
I will pick one up and see what I can do.

Wouldn't it be the same as a Kar.98 stock more or less?

Come to think of it, I think there is a guy who sells small ring 98 stocks on ebay.

Richard's micro fit's web site lists several in stock under close outs...
