I'd like to see rifles on the shelf that need no trigger adjustments, no bedding adjustments, no magazine box clearance work, no offset scope ring inserts to correct for misaligned mounting holes, ...
Rifles like that can be found; generally used Sakos, FN Mauser factory sporters, and pre-64 Winchesters. Haven't handled any, but I imagine pre-war Remingtons could also be included, along with older Savage 99s.
They're generally kind of heavy, and often a bit worn, but in my experience they work and often cost less than middle-range modern production rifles. I see a few in gunshops and a lot of them online.
To be fair, the new rifles I've bought have only had minor issues that were easily fixed, or none at all like the Vanguard I bought last Fall. According to fans here, Tikkas are generally good to go out of the box, but don't visually appeal to me, although the newest one has some subtle changes that help a good bit in that department. I haven't seen any for sale yet, though.
