I'll say this: my standards are dropping daily. First couple days the goal was to better my best mulie, below, from last year taken from up top of this mountain. I've only killed two mule deer, first was a dink.



Buuuuttt.... I'd shoot anything decent now. Give me a few more days and any old forkie is going DOWN!

Too green for the area huh?

Sammo or anyone else, serious question, looking for some education here. Any chance that the deer aren't using this valley much right now because there's cows in it? Do they compete for the same food? Should I look for an area that doesn't have cows in it?

Blacktails will eat grass but are more into forbes and shrubs and so on. I don't know much about mulies, though the one I shot last year was eating grass.

If your there with a flat tire, it's too easily accessible. Yes deer and elk tolerate cattle

Car hunting? Not yet....

It's not a lot of cows, maybe 30 in this drainage. Was just curious. Trying to figure out WTF I'm not seeing anything. By the way it's pretty remote- 4wd road back into here.

A couple guys stopped by camp yesterday, said usually there's several more camps along the top of this drainage. That could be part of it- nobody getting them moving.

I'll get one. I'm mad at 'em.

Just spotted a bone pile down by the creek about 350 yards below me. Clearly someone shot one from right here. This is a great spot- a really great Campfire member who's hunted this area for several decades turned me on to it. Where I'm sitting has clearly been used many times as a sit and watch spot; the juniper I'm tucked into has clipped branches, etc.

If you have been in that same area for 4 days and have yet to see a deer,it's time to move to another area.

Battery dead.

Just came back for a quick snack.

I find it hard to argue with that logic.

I'll give it the morning, then I gotta do a beer run anyway. I can't do this with BEER! Anyway so I'll hit a different spot by midday I know of that has about a 1/2-mile walk in. I can do that. My buddy Jerry got his buck there when we hunted here the first time 5 years ago. It's close to the road, obviously, but it's a bench that you'd never know was there and it's a section of road guys are kinda "going places" when they are on it if that makes sense.... anyway he sent me the GPS co-ords so they we go.

I can see a huge amount of terrain.... boggles my mind that I've seen nothing. I question whether maybe I'm just an idiot at this, but shït, I glassed up and killed two bucks on this mountain before, so maybe not!

Well, the learning how is half the fun anyway!

Actually it had more to do with being slippery, and a little shiny, and me wanting to torque heads with my "Oregon Legal" camo job...... grin
