You picture the scenario that put you there, but if you were forced to work at something really distasteful to you, what would it be?

When I was 19 I got a job with a maintenance company and had to pick up trash outside a nice restaurant once a month. Hated the way I felt when the pretty people walked by on their way to a nice sit down meal. Too proud I guess. Anymore, who cares, we're all just people.

What's yours?

An addition to a sewer treatment plant. Jobs were hard to find and this was Bacon-Davis wages. I found out my pride did have a price.

my senior year in high school i worked at a pants factory after school on the evening shift to help pay bills. i pressed pants on a steam press after they were sewed and before shipping.

i hated it. but it did pay some for some bills that were outstanding. hot, hot, production line, and the material before being washed had a chemical odor that filled the air.

it was a learning experience. and of course it was minimum wage. nailing tin on commercial poultry houses in july & august was far more manly work, for the same pay of course.

I have done it. I worked for Walmart for 2 1/2 years. I worked in Sporting Goods and I was making them a pile of money. But everyday I would have to go to the grocery section and straiten up shelves because the company claimed they had too many employees and they cut back everywhere in the store with grocery and produce taking a big hit. (company wide not just my store)

I was costing them money because I was not in my department taking care of it and selling more products. If they would have asked me to clean a bathroom I would have walked out that very minute.

I paid my dues working for Walmart and it won't happen again. The company as a whole worships the stock holders and almost considers the customers and employees a liability. I'll sleep under a bridge first before I ever go back to them.

Just a one time thing, but a plant maqnager who actually came out to the plant maybe once a month somehow got his coveralls dirty.
Somehow I managed to draw the job of taking them to a laundrymat to wash them.
I damn near quit, but I had a family to feed.
Just writing this I get pissed about it, but I stayed with that company for another 38 years, made a good living at it.

Really, just the memory of that is going to ruin my whole day. mad

No shame in honest work, I started at the bottom and worked my way up. Night janitor, farm hand, fruit picker. About the only low I wouldn't sink to is democratic campaign manager. I'm a pretty senior tech guy, but I'll grab a broom and sweep the floor if needs it and not think anything of it. Anyone not working and refuses to take a job because it's below them, is a turd.

Never had one that I was too embarrassed to do.

However, every time that I pass the person dressed up in the chicken outfit dancing outside the Chicken Express, I know there is no way I would ever do that job. There's a lot of things I'll do for work, but a dancing chicken ain't one of them. Ha.

I have umpired and cleaned grease traps and managed restaurants and retail stores and mowed lawns and sold hats and wrote for a newspaper and stocked shelves third shift and loaded trucks and took the very long road to being an insurance agent. Been doing this ten years. But the path to getting here was very long and dirty and frustrating. Would I do it all again? I dunno if I have the patience or energy anymore but I damn sure am not going to be collecting a check and sitting on the porch

When young, my father worked in the coal mines in SW PA.To say we were poor was an understatement.

When the mines laid off,we all chipped into dig ditches for sewer lines, pits for septic tanks, dug out old basements. We tore down old houses to get lumber and us kids sat there with a piece of old railroad iron and a hammer to straighten out used nails. Anything that brought in a few dollars.

We stood in line to get USDA surplus food and wasn't embarrassed to do it.

Anyone that is embarrassed to do honest work no matter what it is has too much pride and has never been poor.

Not sure if embarrassed is the right word to describe the way I felt.

Many years ago as a young man I worked for a short while at finance company writing up personal loans and knocking on doors doing passed due collections. Was right through the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons too.

Back in those days many finance/loan companies were barely a notch above mafia loan sharks in both interest rates charged and underhanded collection methods.

At the end of the work day I went home as clean as I was when I went in that morning on the outside but felt awfully rotten on the inside.

I told myself that I would take whatever job I could get regardless how bad it was before I'd ever do that kind of work again.

I've worked a few pretty bad jobs over the years since too but never even once given the slightest thought of doing that kind of work again.

I have performed some fairly menial jobs but have never felt ashamed or embarrassed about any. I have always been able to feel pride in the fact that I earned my pay and then some. Anyone looking down their nose at me would have been at risk of having said nose severely bent. GD

I worked my way thru college doing various jobs sometimes 2-3 at a time. 3 summers worked for the forest service maintaining campgrounds which included pumping porta johns and outhouses and garbage pickup. Not a pleasant job but never really was embarrassed by it. I did a short stint in sales andfrankly if a job bothered me that was probably it. I don't really like the idea of intruding on someone's time so it bothered me to make cold sales calls. For the folks that mentioned collection calls that would get to me too. But generally honest work isn't anything to be embarrassed by

I worked for a family utility company while in school and was as low on the totem pole as you can get. My brother and I did everything from cutting riteofway to wiring houses until we were old enough to climb poles. Actually they just added that to our job description. We got dirty. I made the comment to my father that it was embarrassing to get that dirty and sweaty and have to go into someones house to repair their phone. His comment stuck with me. He said no amount of sweat or dirt is embarrassing if you got covered in it honestly.

When I was 18 and first hired, I went to the Men's Room and found my (somewhat elderly) boss
with his jacket off and his shirt sleeves rolled up, standing over a bucket with a mop in his hands.

Shocked! I asked him what he was doing? He said, "I can understand some one having an accident and not making it to the stall."
And with almost sadness he said, 'But I can't understand how anyone could just go and leave their mess (crap) for someone else?"

I said to my boss, "Let me clean this up." - but, My boss said "No, I can do it, and You have your work to do!"
That was important to him too.

I wouldn't say embarrassed, not about the work itself, but ... I don't do well with public speaking. It is "embarrassing" in a way. I wouldn't make a good politician or teacher from that standpoint.

So far as sanitary work, cleaning restrooms or picking up trash, I reckon so long as I didn't have to wear a jacket that said "INMATE" on the back, I wouldn't be all that embarrassed.

True story....

Back in the mid 1990's, I brought a bunch of customers up from Huntsville, Alabama to NYC. This is when Chrysler Electronics still had their assembly plant there. They had never seen the "Big City", so I rented a limo, and after dinner at Smith and Wollensky's, they wanted to go to the sex shops on 42nd Street. We went into a place called Sex World, which was place filled with small rooms, the size of a old phone booth. You sat in the chair, you put a quarter in the slot, a window would open, and you would see a live sex show going on. 25 cents bought you about 2 minutes of viewing time, so you'd sit there and pump in the coins. Of course, many guys "relieved themselves", and, upon departure from the room, a guy with a mop and bucket went in after you to clean up the mess. I don't know what the job description was for that, but "bio-hazard technician" comes to mind.

I've been perusing the local jobs boards recently. The adult book store is looking for a janitor. I do believe I'd have to pass on that gig.

Other than that, sweat, dirt, smell, grease, etc don't bother me and I'd do whatever I had to in order to stay out of the welfare line.

I never knew we were poor, growing up. I thought every kid learned drywall, electrical, plumbing, painting, masonry...(ect) before thier teen years. I grew up in construction.
I had a LOT of crappy jobs stripping out kitchens with bugs, maggots, grease, soot from burned buildings. It all pays the same, and it is all honest sweat.

One thing I will never do again....one summer , I had 5 part time jobs. I was sleeping maybe 3hrs a night. I was working every hour I could get, and it was grinding me into bits. I paid off a lots of bills, but I will never stretch myself that thin again.
Wife can no longer work due to medical issues, so it is all on me. That much stress again would be foolish.

I remember as a young enlisted Soldier overhearing the new S-3, a Lieutenant Colonel, tell the Operations Sergeant Major to go pick up his dry cleaning.

Without hesitation the Sergeant Major replied, "I'm not your [bleep] secretary." It was a tense working relationship.

Yeah, no schit. Or too embarrassed to stand on a street corner and take money from honest hard working people. Problem is, the liberals just make it easier and easier to get welfare. So there little threat of public shame now. That would be mean.

Probably would flinch at the thought of being a pole dancer these days. Maybe.

Back in the day it never occurred there were jobs I would not do. There were more than a few available that I wanted to do and that was the line of demarcation.

My thoughts exactly. I grew up in Youngstown Ohio after the steel industry crashed. I never collected a single day of unemployment. Some of my jobs really sucked, but never once did I need assistance.

For three years during high school, I played football and worked three part time jobs to help my family. I had a job at Howard Johnson's out on the Ohio Turnpike, I worked weekends around football for a construction company cleaning equipment and setting up field office trailers for transport, and in the fall, I skinned muskrats for my fur buyer. I also hunted, fished, and trapped to help put food on the table for our family. There was no such thing as being embarrassed with a job. We considered ourselves lucky to have one at all.

The septic tank guy I use is borderline rich too. He's not too proud to do it and he makes a fortune.

Pretty much what the gentleman stated about standing in a welfare line. I've caught chickens, picked rocks, worked on a produce farm, put away hay, put on paper coveralls and rubber boots and walked around in a schit pit spraying flies with chickens overhead crapping on me, worked as a plumber, you name it.

These days I make better money doing easier work, but I'd do any of that again before I'd stand in a welfare line.

Sales of unsafe or overpriced products. Especially such things as legal but unsound financial and insurance programs. There are honorable people selling decent insurance policies and financial products, but there are others that are barely worth the paper and ink used. It is hard for the average person to know the difference.

Pissed off to do, but not embarrassed. I sang with the Navy Band for 20 years. Sang at Nixon's funeral, and after, it started to rain. We were in choker whites, and we're ordered to move about 100 wet and muddy potted plants, for some reason. That pissed me off. Then, they forgot to send a bus to take us back to the barracks. Nice.

One of the most important things I learned from my father is that it is never embarrassing to be dirty or smelly due to your work. I've done a lot of jobs that were unpleasant or smelly, catching turkeys, gutting fish, running offal to the rendering plant, etc. None of it really bothered me. As long as it it's a job that serves the community, I'm fine with it.

One job I'll avoid to the last, however, is fiber glassing. Hot, sweaty, nasty chemicals and odors and I always end up with crap on my skin and everywhere, no matter what I do.

Have been working since age 13. Have had at least two sources of income (sometimes three) since wife and I got married and started having kids. Everything from scrubbing garage floors in a truck shop to shoveling silage fed cow manure on a dairy farm. As above, the only thing I have been too proud to do is collect a check. Had an opportunity one time when primary job had a forced furlough. Went out and hustled up on Job#2. Made more money on Job #2 than the going unemployment rate for Job#1 during that time period.

Not rich by any stretch. But all of the material things that God has seen fit to bless us with, the wife and I have worked for with our own labor.

Haven't run across one yet - and after many tasks like shoveling manure at a dairy, digging ditches for days on end, cleaning bathrooms and port-a-potty units, night shifts at a mental institution, taking care of an older fellow who had body sores, bowel and digestive problems and some other challenging traits - may not encounter one I would not do if needed. We shall see.

But, can say that trying to provide sensible and ethical leadership for a place that employs college faculty can be a lot more rotten job. And, once turned down flat the nomination for sure-fire election as a state Senator - that job probably would have been embarrassing.

Guy that managed the horse farm where I collected studs, AI'd mares etc used to always put a football helmet on when it was collection time.

I figured it wouldn't really work if a stud really struck and it made it really hard to see anything peripherally. So I passed on the helmet. Plus I was chasing a couple of the girls in that group at the barn and had to look cool at all times.

Well I be been spending a lot of time at home with sick wife. The phone rings constantly with various sales calls. A VP of marketing job is one I'd be embarrassed to do. To get up every morning and think I'm going to pester the heck out of a bunch of people that are peacefully minding their own business today would be more than I could handle. These guys rate up there with computer hackers in my opinion. Sorry rant over.

my first job was working the ice cream counter at a howard johnsons on the PA turnpike. i had to wear black polyester pants, white shirt, white and orange striped jacket, black bow tie and a black and orange striped paper hat. all for the princely sum of $2.15/hr. i was embarrassed and the job did not last. i would not work a job that involved a douchey looking uniform anymore. i even had a problem working security after i got out of the AF. felt really stupid wearing a rentacop uniform right after i had worn my AF uniform. that job didn't last either.

Was in the local Walmart per usual about 08:30-ish one Saturday morning getting the week's shopping done before it got too busy, when I noticed a gathering of Walmart employees in a circle near the back of the store. Bear in mind, these aren't pimply-faced teenagers, these are grown men & women in their 30's, 40's, 50's, etc.

As I got closer, I started hearing some enthusiastic shouting, "Give me a W!" "W!" "Give me an A!" "A!" "Give me an L!... and what does that spell???" "WALMART! WALMART! YAAAH!!!" blush sick

I've heard it several more times since, so I know it must be a regular thing, but I walked away thinking, "Okay. I could work at Walmart if I had to, it may be a little humiliating at first, but I'd survive. I maybe could even fake it thru an employee pep rally in the back, out of sight of the public.. but right out there in front of the public?? My family would have to be borderline starving."

I was an ambitious little tyke selling Christmas cards door-to-door at the young age of 6. My older bud paid me a nickel per box sold. As I recall, he made a quarter on my sale.

Fast forward and there's likely very few jobs that I did not either do or participate in as my Mother ran Manpower and there was always employment.

Most gratifying job----feeding folks for no money!

Worst job---feeding folks for money!

Current job---I just don't know!!!!

Can't really think of any jobs that I'd be too embarrassed to do.....BUT some of those dirtiest jobs on TV might be close to the red line. When Mike Rowe almost pukes so do I!! eek

I grew up a plumbers son, and had plenty jobs that were dirtier. The only thing I can think of is a defense attorney (which many of my good friends are). There aren't enough innocent people in the world for any of them to make a dime.

My step-father was a roofer who worked on remodels and some new construction.

I chased more lines in attics, crawl spaces etc. than I care to recall. To this day, the damp old smell dirt has in crawl spaces brings back memories of crawling around in tight crawl spaces where a couple times I got stuck. Albeit for just a short time. For a kid who was mildly claustrophobic, it wasn't fun.

Agree. There are some things against my morals that I haven't done even when hungry.

I have refused to de claw cats! De bark dogs, and predispose the public to food animal antibiotic residues. Pinching anal sacs is also not n my list of to do items.

The guy that plumbed my house probably makes more than 95% of everyone around here. He works his butt off, does outstanding work, and has work lined up. That's one guy that'll never be poor.

Meanwhile my cousin has two guys with master's degrees running the cash register at his drug store for $10 an hour. They're too proud, lazy, or perfumed to do real work.

The septic tank guy I use is borderline rich too. He's not too proud to do it and he makes a fortune.

Been a plumber almost 35 yrs, while I don't do many schit calls,I think I've made an honest living for my family. That being said,I don't think it's for everybody.
And some days it REALLY sucks......

Any job that required me to check my integrity at the door.

I've never understood how so many can leave their integrity behind when it comes to money.

I've never understood how a few can leave their integrity behind when they get on the internet.
