I had a short action Remington 700 BDL chambered for the 250 A.I. I liked it. Don't ask why I sold it..... It had a 23" long #2 contour stainless barrel. I only shot 87 and 100 grain bullets in it as I was woodchuck hunting. If I had it to do over I would build a 250 Souper, the 308 necked down. I wouldn't build a 257 Creedmoor as I would not be looking for a long range rifle. Since I have a Savage Axis with a 257 Roberts barrel, the point is moot.

Sqweller - very nice and collectible Ruger.

I had a 1976 Ruger rechambered to 250AI. Consistently shot mediocre, no matter what. Killed some deer and bear with it but couldn't rely on it for long range so down the road it went. Still have brass and dies. Hope to end up with a Savage lever gun in one someday.

I have a 1915 action sans barrel, and that's what I'm thinking.

What's the heat treating like on a 1915 action?

Do how does the 250AI compare to the 250 AU (Ackley Unimproved)?

I have one in a heavy barreled Mauser action.

It does a dog town justice with 75 grain V-Max.

If one loads it to the parent pressure not much is gained but when loaded to it's potential,it sings.

Forming loads shoot well as the formed brass loads do.

Hey Mike. The action I have is a 250-3000 Rifle. I kind of clipped my thought in half. I have been thinking of putting a fast twist barrel on it, not going to the AI, just sticking with a standard 250. Thought it would be cool to have an old model that would shoot longer bullets.

I've done a couple of them, but moved on to different cartridges.

One was a Ruger 77 RSI that didn't feed well, so I got another 250-3000 barrel and rechambed it in 25 Souper.

The other was a Savage 99 CD. i wanted more speed, so I rechambered it a second time to 25-284.

I have better luck with the 25 Souper than with the 250Ai, as it fed more smoothly. in both the Ruger and Savage.

I special ordered a Model 110 Lightweight Storm in .250 Savage from the factory two years ago and had my local smith immediately punch it out to A.I. when it came in. The ultra-lite 20" barrel hurts velocity a little, but it will put three 100gr Partitions into 3/4" groups pretty consistently at 100 yards. I also tried some 85gr Nosler BT's and they shot just over MOA with a load I plucked out of a manual, but I've yet to sit down and properly develop a load for them.

One thing I did have to change when I punched it out to the Ackley was the mag box and follower. Switched to a factory .308 mag and follower and if feeds reliably about 95% of the time. Every now and again I'll get one that hangs up a bit (similar to how the 6.5 CM hangs up in the Savage's), but just taking the forward pressure off the bolt momentarily alleviates the hangup. Pretty sure it's being caused by the steep shoulder angle catching on the chamber mouth, which can easily be fixed by chamfering the chamber mouth a little. Just a matter of getting around to pulling the barrel and doing it.

As long as there's still lead in the air, there's still hope!
