Having played in a golf tournament the day before I was on the 10th floor of a Reno casino hotel room and flipped on the news with my coffee. I was watching when the second tower was hit and looked out the window at airliners landing and taking off at McCarron airport and felt vulnerable as hell in that hotel tower. Nobody knew what was going on so I hightailed it out of there and drove home listening to the radio.

Sad day. America changed forever that day.

I was at work, when a coworker who had a radio told me. The office crew had a little b/w TV they rolled out into the shop so we could all see it unfold.
Spent the rest of the day keeping an eye on the Pakistanis we had working there in another part of the shop. They were always agitating for a prayer corner, and special time off for their prayers. They all quit soon afterwards.
They were not missed.

I was a Chief on the USS Emory S Land, a forward deployed sub tender out of LaMaddalena, Italy, and we had just pulled into Gaeta to tend the 6th flt Med Flagship, the USS LaSalle, for her 3 week maintenance availability. I had flown out of Phili. two days prior, from burying my father, I remember looking over as we overflew NYC, and seeing the WTC in the morning light...

Anyhow, our skipper was on CCTV, giving the inport brief, when a yeoman off camera, handed him a note and he made mention of what sounded like a small plane crashing into the WTC building. Rick, a Senior Chief HT that ran the R-1 (Shipfitters) Division and I (I was the ship's 3MC), went over to the LaSalle's CPO mess to catch the news about it (our brow having just gone down shortly before). We entered their Chief's mess and saw on their TV that it was, well, what it was. We were just seeing video of the second plane hitting. Rick and I stood there quietly for a few more minutes then strode numbly back to our ship, where we were soon back underway for the next three weeks. (for a ship like us, it was deemed safest to be at sea rather then in port anywhere) Prior to this, in our home port in LaMadd, we had an incredible duty section rotation of 7 section duty (once every 7 days), well, that went to 3 section and right quick! I was also a section leader and so I had to add about 14 extra armed watch standers and up our ATFP training. While we were underway, we held weapons quals on the helo deck to get as many folk qualified as possible. I qualified and then jumped in and helped the GMs work with people to get them qualed. I recall we had a Marine FAST team heloed in for training and as, well, lets be honest, to up our game exponentially. Twas a bad time...

Oldman03 did you make it to Detroit, or did we make you land somewhere else???

Landed in Nashville. Pilot comes on intercom and said there was an emergency, everybody buckle up, and we were landing in Nashville. Then he put the plane in the steepest dive I've ever been on.... scared the schit out of everyone. We all thought our plane had problems. A few minutes later the pilot comes on the intercom and apologized for not letting us know that there was nothing wrong with the plane, it was a national emergency, but nothing more. We had no clue what had happened. We landed, must have been the first of many, and I being familiar with the airport, sprinted thru it to the car rentals. As I was running thru the airport, I saw on tv one of the planes hitting one of the towers. After I got a car, I got my luggage and called my boss. Come home or continue to Detroit. He said come home, so I drove the rental to NO, got my truck and drove home. Got home about 2 am.

Standing in front of a milling machine & the fab foreman came running out of the office yelling about it. We all gathered around the TV. When the second plane hit it was obvious as to what was happening.
I wanted to go home so bad. To lock & load or cry or both. Damnit...tissue time.

Hanging siding in a low-income housing development in East Stroudsburg, PA.

We had a black gentleman's house ringed with pump jacks and stages and were going about our business when he came out the door hollering "Get yo' asses in here, you gots to see this S***!

We got in there in time to see the second plane make impact. Ended up sitting there in a stranger's living room for the next 3 hours. Packed it up and headed home.

Yeah, first on 'many'............ EVERY aircraft in US Airspace was put on the ground, in about 2 hours. Save a military or two.

Finishing breakfast, and had the Today show on.
Evidently they had cameras on the WTC, as they said a plane had hit the first tower - then showed footage.
Still watching intently when they showed the second plane hitting the other tower.
Spent the morning pretty well glued to the TV.

Me, my wife and 17 others were in Germany on a trip that was business related. It was more of a vacation trip than business though.
While in Germany all of us were on a charter bus going to do some sightseeing when the driver turned the radio up to the overhead speakers with the news.

Every night we were all glued to CNN on the TV in the motel bar. That was the only way we had to get any information as to what was going on. Every other news was spoken in German.

Our 16 year old son was home alone and my daughter was off at college. Luckily my parents kept an eye on our son but he was talking about joining the army. My wife was terrified. Not sure if cell phones were out yet but we were able to call home a couple times to check on him.

Since all air travel had been halted we were stranded but were finally able to fly home after 2 weeks. I still remember seeing soldiers with machine guns in the Paris airport when we changed flights. There was one time on a flight that a guy kept pacing the plane’s isles looking really nervous. I kept my eye on him but nothing came of it. I also remember flying into Newark and over the burning rubble of the buildings.

It was a very unnerving time.

You Coasties had time to do PT in the morning, every morning? Probably be a good thing if the Navy ships had time for that but that wasn't happening.

I remember the Commercial Flight my little brother was on had to land in Denver. He was stuck in that Libertard Schitthole for two or three days.

What I should have said, 'First of many that landed in Nashville'. I was able to get a rental car and many people were stranded for days.
