Posted this pic before; 6#7oz Great picture! Here’s mine. Been through a few scopes. Now Scotty that’s just not fair. Tossing a gorgeous, original .270 into the mix. 😜

Trystan, You can find the Proof bbl weights on their web site under Tikka pre-fits. The issue with Proof is that they don’t have much of a selection of twists and lengths. I would get a 1-9, or faster, and max length of 22”. I am guessing the factory fluted bbl is close to 2# 2-3oz.

Incidentally, a 6.5# 270 loaded with 150’s and R26 gets a little snappy.

Even my Grendel at a few ounces less actually has some recoil. Not unpleasant, but it ain’t a .223 either. Same goes for my Fieldcraft 6mm. I’ve put a few through a Hunter in 6.5 you-know-what, and it’s a bit lively, not painful, but you have to control it to get consistent results. JB’s tip about using a folding towel is a good one.

Interesting thread. I've been looking for a Kimber Montana in 270 win for a bit but haven't found one. I love the 270. Loaded with 129 LRX, I can't think of a better antelope-deer-elk rifle. I had one but it was liberated about 5-6 years ago along with the entire contents of the truck, and the truck.
As Rin points out, my 270 loved 60 gr Re26 under a 150 Partition. It was an honest 3000 ft/sec and sub MOA rifle/load. But it was a "sporty" as they say. I loaded 129 LRX for my buddy at 3100 and they weren't bad. A sub 7lb Lazer shooter is the ticket for most of my hunting. I've used my Kimber MT 308 for long enough, it would be hard to leave it home.....

I have 3.
Tikka T3 stainless with Talleys and a 3.5-10 Luepold @7.4 Winchester Featherweight LE with 3.5-10 @ 7.6 Winchester 70 with a custom stock and 3x9 Denver Redfield WF @ 8 ish
The Tikka is under an inch every time with 140ABs and deadly. One of my go-to rifles.

Its been my go to for a few years. Love to have a Montana as well. Hell, I'd probably chop it down to 22" as well.

That's a neat rifle GR. Is that what you use for elk? What're you using for your elk/deer hunting?

I'll keep that in mind. I've said many times when I was roaming in the backcountry that I wish my rifle weighed more.

I've carried enough 8-9 lbs rifles up at 10,000+ feet ..... "Getting in shape" also makes me chuckle. That's an interesting observation from a guy that's never met me. I may have packed out an Elk in the last 24 hours.

I would probably put a dollar that most who don a pack to chase elk look for more portability in their rifles. Just me, I have seldom wished my rifles were heavier.

I see things differently. An extra two pounds of rifle will not change the outcome of your hunt. Having two less pounds of rifle can destroy your hunt given an impact from a drop, ring failure, or scope failure. I like lighter rifles and 25oz scopes with a rock solid mounting system.

Missing - because you don't shoot the rifle confidently from field positions, doesn't do much for the hunt, either. GR

I have been packing a heavy Ruger .300 for years now. Finally started bugging me for real last season. I am now packing a much lighter rig that "should" kill just as well on the end that matters. Shaving a couple pounds or so off a rig really does make a big difference at the end of the day...probably not as much as the 27 pounds I need to shave off my carcass.
