When I was a 9th grader, I purchased a 99F.... a featherweight....in 300 Savage. New in the box.... Got it thru a discount catalogue business. In the spring of 1960. Took a deer or two with it. learned that hunting in the NE Minnesota brush might be a little easier with a scope on it.
Put a Weaver K4, post and crosshair, on it using the Pachmayr Lo-Swing tip off mount. About 1964, The rig worked really well in brush and dim light. Have never regretted that choice of reticule. The swing off choice worked well on close in moving critters.
Later i started reloading for the 300 and worked up a consistent semi-hot load using IMR4320 and 150 gr Hornady bullets.
After about 30 years the rifle's groups started to spread and we traced the problem to the mount. So i switched to Weaver mounts. Back in Business. Off a bench the rifle often would shoot 1 MOA < --> 1.5 MOA when i did my part.
Originally the recoil of the light rifle bothered me. But i grew and i did more shooting with the 99 and other rifles and learned to tolerate the recoil. Took my share of whitetails with it.
The 99 is sorta retired now. So am I. It still looks pretty good. Works better.
Hopefully this is useful, iron sights inc. ( and probably others ) can seal the scopes that weren't sealed from the factory. I have a several old they rebuilt and sealed. I call it sealed, maybe pressurize, gas filled, etc. are better terms. Anyone reading this thread should know what I'm referring to.
one of Lightfoots posts says the K6 was introduced in1950/51. The K6 on my EG has the earlier adjustments without covers. I think they are the earliest version. I'm in the hospital with the flu so can't go check for the other markings. I'm not that sick but at 77 with asthma and diabetes can't take a chance

Sounds like a sound move, David. Better to error on the safe side. Get well quick; hope you can make it home in time for Christmas.
Thanks Keith. They might let me out today but wife may not be able to get through. But weather is improving so will get home before Christmas. Anyone have any thoughts on the K6 with the early adjustments?

Keith, did that front mount come with two aluminum inserts that go inside the tube and form around the objective lens?
Mad_dog, I've never had it apart, but there are two slit halves per this schematic (Note that the schematic shows the first version K4's external friction adjustment) and in the pic I attached, you can see the top of the split halves (they are blued).

David, according to Stroebel's book, the K6 was introduced in 1948. If that's true, that would explain the early adjustments on your K6.
Thanks Jaaack, the serial number places the rifle as being 1947 production. It has a trigger shoe and that scope. It looks like it never been fired. Someone may have set it up as some sort of target rifle and never used it. It's a 250-3000.

I was talking with lightfootmount about an S1 sight for a savage 1899. he doesn't have one but suggested you. As a new member I'm not able to PM, therefore I'm sending you this note and my email below
