My mom took us into town for swim lessons. Did that for a few years and got to be pretty decent swimmers.

My birthday was/is in August and you could rent the city pool(with lifeguards) during the evenings so a couple years we had pool parties.

Pool parties were fun.

We still do them occasionally.

I'm always surprised when people say they can't swim. Guess I was lucky.

Dad had a pond.

Grandparents had a pond 800 yards away.

Neighbor had a ski lake built with lots of little fingers sticking off it just wide enough for a canoe.

Creek at the back of the property.

My summers were spent in the water.

Nope. I've tried to learn, but always sink like a rock. I'm to old to care anymore. I'll put a life jacket on and paddle around the lake though.

I remember the dead man float but we called it drown proofing. It worked very well in the pool but some kind of boring.

The number of people I went to basic with that couldn't swim (about 15) didn't surprise as much as how those same 15 didn't understand WHY they needed to learn to swim.

US Navy and all - I guess that wasn't connecting for them.

I get people not knowing how - dudes grow up in cities where they just don't leave or have access to legitimate swimming. I don't understand not seeing how learning to swim would be a good deal - IN THE F-N NAVY.

Yep, Mom tricked me into swimming at 4 yrs. Shallow beach, drop off, she kept backing up (treading water) the rest is history. I think she was teaching me, hmmmm. GWP. 🐾👣🇨🇦

Welll- SCUBA is more "controlled sinking" than swimming in the traditional sense lol.
