They are cheap rifles. My 581 cost IIRC $44.95 in 1967. It’s been a long time since I had it out, but I dragged that thing all over the place as a kid and as an “adult” without a single problem. The original magazine got a bit sticky, so I picked up a spare when they were still cheap, but I think it really just needs cleaning and maybe a bit of lube. I wouldn’t mind picking up one of the nicer rifles built on the same action, but they are priced beyond their worth to me. A CZ is a much better value, especially the 457s that fixed all my gripes with the older models.

The 5mm is a good cartridge, but not good enough to justify the trouble involved, when one of the .17s or .22 mag will do the same jobs.

Like Pappy explained. look at the bolt and extractor, not to mention the trigger.

I have a Remington 592, the tubular magazine style, and have also had a 591, the detachable magazine style. The 592 shoots the original 37 grain HPPL load better than the Aguila/Centurion 30 grain load. The 591 was long gone before the Mexican ammo was available, but it also shot the original 37 grain HPPL load into MOA or better groups. The 580 parts gun isn't as accurate as the 592 with either ammo, but I think that the barrel might be at fault. I still have a couple thousand rounds of ammo on the shelf, about half and half between the original R-P and the newer Aguila/Centurion, but I never seem to get around to taking either rifle with me when I go afield or to the range.

If you can find the Aguila/Centurion ammo and your rifle shoots either of their 30 grain load wells, they are fun guns.

Haven’t been able to find any of the 37-38 grain but have seen some of the 30 grain, which of course is usually on back order.

There never was a 37 grain bullet loaded for the 5mm. The original Remington ammo used a 38 grain power lokt hollow point and the Aguila stuff was loaded with a 30 grain HP and a 30 grain hollow soft point.The original 38 grain Remington load was significantly better than either of the Aguila loads and a better killer than anything ever loaded in the 17HMR or .22 WMR. Anybody who says different hasn't used all three.

I had a 501 for a few years. I would love to see the 5mm come back to life and a few decent rifles offered, but we all know the likelihood of that happening.

I never used one enough to be comfortable saying it was any better than the .22 WMR for killing stuff. I do know some guys up on the border that I used to run coyotes with who thought it was, but like a lot of these issues, nobody looks really hard at things like shot placement etc. Given the current situation, it is really a less than relevant argument.

I do know one guy who had one converted over to CF, along with the attendant reloading dies etc.

Someone could/should write a book about Remington's failed great ideas.

Their biggest failure was the way the Sandy Hook lawsuit was handled.

I just purchased a 591M at a local online gun auction 2 weeks ago. As soon as I was the winning bidder, I tried to find some ammo. I was able to find some Aguila ammo and ordered several boxes. This past weekend I mounted a leupold m-8 4x scope and sighted it in a 50yds. I then moved on to the 100yd target and shot a 5 shot group. I couldn't tell exactly what the group looked like looking through the scope. When I walked to the target I was pleasantly surprised. I did not expect it to shoot as well as it did, especially since the trigger is not very good.

Have both a 591M and a 592M. Never bought any of the original 38 grain loads, so I have nothing to compare to. But, the 30 grain Mexican stuff is just pretty impressive IMO. My 592M seems to like it a little better than the 591M. My best, to date, is 280 lasered yards on a fairly small groundhog.

Wanting to get it out calling coyotes some day to see how it does there.

I've had the 591 since about 1970, or so, and still have 199 rounds of the original 38gr ammo.

That rifle has shot lot's of stuff, fox, racoons, opossums, crows, pigeons, turkeys and the list goes on.

For the past 20 years, it has been my main fall turkey gun.
