Born and raised in the Canal Zone. Left for college in 1968. Back a couple of times while in college. Not back since. My parents left in '74 when Jimmy gave it back to Panama. The place is far from the same when we had the Zone. I think the new, bigger locks do pump water. Everything in the old locks is gravity from Gatun Lake. The water flows through and out to sea. A sea level canal has been a dream for years. For decades. Part of the problem is the Atlantic has tides of 1' to 3'. The Pacific has tides of 12' to 18'. A pumped system retrofitted to the old locks would work. Would also cost a few dollars.
