My folks used to love to see in on relish trays (remember them?) at restaurants. I never was able to bring myself to try it; still haven't. I do know that if it looks "fuzzy" in the jar (as ALL home-jarred I have seen) there is no way.

Its a delicacy indeed. People would buy and eat more of it if it was priced higher

I love the stuff. The pickled onions in the jar are damn fine too.

LOL

I like it. Have only had the cream style as that’s what my parents bought when I was young.

Family tradition to have some on NYE at midnight for good luck in the new year. No idea how that started though.

I've been eating it my whole life, pickle in wine sauce, in cream sauce brat herring, roll mops even raw herring in the Netherlands. I just opened a jar of Vita two days ago, I haven't had theirs for a few years as I've been sweet pickling my bow fished carp. I do like the carp better as it is firmer. I like it on salads for lunch on crackers for snacks.

Pickled carp with red onions.

Can't add anything I haven't said in previous threads. Love it.

Going shopping today. Will have to look for some.

My local mart had some in the LASC Co brand. Nice 1" squares of herring about the same quality as from Vita. Also discovered that radishes make the perfect taste and texture compliment to them. Just a delightful combination.

That’s what I’ve found also, a slice of radish or pickled beet.

My dad loves pickled herring. I can eat it once a year or so. I make homemade pickled fish from Pink salmon on the years they’ve running.

Another LOL. A nearly annual event it seems.

Coincidentally I came across this recipe from another website and was intrigued;

Quote
My MIL, who immigrated (LEGALLY) from Norway, was famous for her delicious open faced sandwiches (Traditional koldtbord or Smörgåsbord ). One of her most popular was the one made of chopped hard boiled eggs, mixed with a small amount of mayonnaise, sweet beets, and finely chopped pickled herring. People absolutely loved them but she would never tell anyone what was in them until AFTER they had eaten several…and then they were usually shocked! (But they would also sheepishly admit they were delicious!)
