We love to cook with cast iron. The wife has lost her sense of smell. She cooked some venison steak tonight and the house filled with the smell of bad fish. When I asked if she was using the "fish" skillet she said no and is not talking to me tonight 😂
How often do you need to reseaon cast iron?

Just wipe it now and then with a little oil or crisco to keep it from looking "dry." Usually the oil you cook in will keep it seasoned pretty well.

It's important to not use any soap when you clean it! Just use hot water and a scrubber of some sort to clean it.

It’s actually OK to use a bit of modern liquid dish soap.

It was the older soaps with lye that were hard on cast iron.

I have never washed mine. I use table salt to scour them, wipe them down and leave them.

A custom butcher friend of mine had two big cabinet smokers. One for meat the other for fish and never the twain shall meet.

I drove two hours this morning each way for a dr appointment and brought my wife a sandwich from sandwich shop she likes.
She was pissed because I didn’t also bring her a cookie.

Chocolate chip cookies are not the same without it.

And I've used Crisco one cast iron, but I prefer bacon grease.

They say everything happens for a reason.
For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

I use cast Iron all the time some things need soap to clean it. I dry the iron. oil it and heat up on the stove let it cool then store it.

I run water as hot as I can get it on my fry pans, then wipe off the rest with a paper towel. I cook with butter and there's always plenty left when wiping the pan. I leave just enough to have a slight film.

It is sad that your wife wasn't more grateful to your thoughtfulness. She can order cookies off of Amazon, all kinds of cookies, 24 hours/day.
