The checkering looks really great on that 788.

Did you enhance the grain on the bottom 788?

Some came with pretty nice wood, here's my 788-222Rem

That's by far the best figured wood of any 788 that I've ever seen.
Most 788's have the same figured wood as a pop cycle stick.

I wrapped the wood and put it in a box when I made the rifle into a coyote hunting rifle. I'll put it back in the original wood when I get to old to call critters.

Those birch stocks are distinctive looking at times, after you add some stain and refinish them. My walnut stocked 788 isn't as nice as the OP's, but it's not as bad as some I've seen:
