TPWD has been shooting them out of helicopters for over a decade near Big Bend Ranch State Park and other bighorn reintroduction areas. They'll dwindle for a year or so then are back full strength. They are as bad as hogs.

They are in the canyons around Dryden also. About 100m west of Del Rio. I must of forgot to set the date and time on that camera, but it was a picture from last year. Had a picture of an elk down there in my canyon also, but I can't find it so I guess I deleted it.

This was my first and only one on a south Texas ranch. Spot and stalk in the mid nineties.

I started a thread elsewhere about experience vs trophy. One thing these critters bring to the table is a great experience hunt. If like me, you will never be able to afford a sheep hunt, I highly recommend an Audad hunt in SW Texas. Spot and stalk. Big, rugged, quiet country after very warry and worthy game. I may do it again some time.

As to eating them, they are goats. People all over the world eat goat. Look to the Mediterranean or Middle East for recipes. Texas style chicken fried steak is also a great way to do it. You may have to get creative but they are perfectly edible.

A friend and I hunted them just west of Marfa TX. It was on a 38K acer ranch that wasn't high fenced. We both got nice rams and it was all spot and stalk. I used a Ruger #1 300 H&H and and my buddy had a 7MM-08.
The backstraps were chewy but we ended up grinding it and added some pork sausage and spices and it made great summer sausage and burger.
It was a fun hunt and I would do it again.

We had a pretty good sized herd of Aoudad on our West Ranch for years I think we have finally killed them all out haven't seen one for a couple of years, don't miss them at all. they can be a good hunt, but the B.S. about how hard they are to kill and you have to shoot a mile to get one makes me think they are 24 Hour Campfire Elk in Des guise. I only hunted them once. The guide was griping about my 270 WSM...until I dumped one with a single 150gr Partition.

He kept telling me I should have more horsepower.

I wonder if their perceived difficulty to anchor is related to long shots that are poorly placed?

Most people try to shoot them like deer, etc…

I’ve killed a half dozen with a bow, they kill as easy as a pig or deer.

They’re a spot and stalker’s dream.

Took my first Aoudad hunt this past October in the Davis Mtns of West Texas. By far one of my favorite hunts to date! Great outfitter and a wonderful trip and experience with my 16yr old son along as well as a couple good friends. Beautiful landscape and they put all 4 of us on some nice rams! I enjoyed this hunt way more than my Montana mule deer hunt we took several years back. I’d love to go again!
