When I was growing up in the 70’s and 80’s being a millionaire was huge. I remember our neighbor won a million in the lottery and immediately quit his job and bought a 1500’ house with a 2 car garage 2 blocks up the street, and we looked at him in awe.
Wondering today what’s the equivalent now of a millionaire in 1980. Apparently its $3,650,000 in adjusted dollars. I was actually surprised that’s all it was.

There was 500,000 millionaires in the US in 1980, there’s 22,000,000 millionaires in the US today.

You’re actually on point, I read a book called the millionaire next door at the request of my CFP a lot of years ago. They pulled together a huge group of millionaires they managed money for and asked a series of questions. Most popular watch, Timex. Age of your vehicle, 8-10 years. Favorite beer, cheap domestic.
Basically a lot of millionaires work hard and spend little and it adds up, but they never really “lived like a millionaire”

Lot of unsuspecting folks are millionaires…

Have a buddy, you’d never know he has money.

If you see in Home Depot or Walmarks he’d prolly have dirty work clothes on. Driving a bear up truck.

They’ve done the $3 mil house in Destin. The fishing yacht. The private plane.

He rather be a deer camp drinking beer.

Was it “office space” they asked the guy what he’d do if he had a million bucks?
He said, 2 girls at once.

Timex, older vehicle, cheap beer; I guess I live like a millionaire.

Going for the dry humor and was joking about being rich.


But low overhead is key.

Guy I trout fish with had great paying jobs for this area , was left several million from his parents estate. To look at him you'd think he was broke . Same bibs all the time , reels taped to his fishing rods ( his have reel seats ) just broken and not replaced. Drinks Bud longnecks . His one somewhat big expense is a membership at a local golf club. Plays every day he's not fishing. Another one used to come in where I work hauling industrial sludge as a side gig. One night he asked to look at one of our rubber tire loaders a Case 821 . Told him to help himself , next time I talked to him he had bought 2 to move corn silage on a couple dairy farms. Guy usually wears the same clothes and drove a Chevy luv pickup when he wasn't in a road tractor or farm truck.

There are a millions of middle class working people who are in debt a million or more just on their mortgages.

A million $ sure isn’t what it used to be…… but it sure beats being broke.

Reminds me when I was a kid and Howard Hughes was the billionaire.

So there’s 58 times more billionaires, 44 times more millionaires now than 1980.

And many multi-billionaires like Musk, Gates and many others.
