When I was growing up in the 70’s and 80’s being a millionaire was huge. I remember our neighbor won a million in the lottery and immediately quit his job and bought a 1500’ house with a 2 car garage 2 blocks up the street, and we looked at him in awe.
Wondering today what’s the equivalent now of a millionaire in 1980. Apparently its $3,650,000 in adjusted dollars. I was actually surprised that’s all it was.

His one somewhat big expense is a membership at a local golf club. Plays every day he's not fishing. Another one used to come in where I work hauling industrial sludge as a side gig. One night he asked to look at one of our rubber tire loaders a Case 821 . Told him to help himself , next time I talked to him he had bought 2 to move corn silage on a couple dairy farms. Guy usually wears the same clothes and drove a Chevy luv pickup when he wasn't in a road tractor or farm truck.

There are a millions of middle class working people who are in debt a million or more just on their mortgages.

A million $ sure isn’t what it used to be…… but it sure beats being broke.

Inflation in general is causing a lot of the “wealth” creation, sadly few recognize its relationship to purchasing power/value of the USD. People aren’t getting rich, they just have twice as many dollars that are worth 1/3 of what they used to be worth. If you’re retired you better have your wealth in assets that appreciate parallel to the rate of inflation.
I agree with Calvin, the equity you have in your primary residence, unless you’re planning on selling at retirement shouldn’t be considered when talking net worth for retirement purposes. Same with any other real estate that doesn’t generate income like second homes etc.
I’m 52 in a few months and SS/Medicare is not a factor in my retirement planning. If there’s something there I’ll take advantage of it, but I’m doubtful. Migrants will collapse it which is likely part of the plan

I've got an uncle you'd never know was one. He's pushing 90, stayed in the old sketchy part of town all these years in a paid for house. Literally just bought his first new vehicle ever as a treat to himself...a tacoma. Claims to have saved and/or invested 33% of every paycheck he had ever made, he was GT grad in chemical engineering, traveled the world for chalk companies and ran plants. Had millions but so stingy he wouldn't even buy my aunt a clothes dryer, she had continue using the clothes line. Has given the max gift to all 6 of his grandchildren each year since they were born, so they left HS with a nice little next egg. When he kicks the buckets, leaving each daughter a cool mil and each grandkid 500k. Aunt died from brain cancer in the 90s and he remarried, he spoiled the next wife and it was bad subject for the daughters. She got to enjoy his successes and not their mother.

Now my other uncle was one too, VP at Abbott and ran between all their international offices and facilities. His kids never wanted anything, and they ended up being two of the most liberal jokers in the family and married other liberals too. Lets just say one works for the DA in Fulton county. One has already blown through about 6 mil of his inheritance. Uncle is dead now so glad he's not around to see it but I'm sure he would be missing those grandbabies.

I knew an old rancher east of here, was an heir to the Phillips Petroleum fortune, that would straighten old nails for his hands to use re-building corral fences. He drove an 8-10 year old, beater Toyota pickup, most of the time.

there has been lots of studies on where people feel comfortable ...retired ...on a yearly income, 75,000.00 a year seems to be a sweet spot. of course depends on where you live. quick math....1mil....you could draw 50,000.00 a year for 20 years with no interest. add in 25,000.00 ss per year.....interest stretches it out....also depends on how much you want to leave behind. I have taken pretty much all of my big ticket items off when I was working....couple left then it will be hunting and fishing locally and couple of different states, that's the way I planned it....also when you retire start off with new or fairly new cars/trucks, it may sound cool to be driving around with 350,000 on your truck...no thanks...bob

When you look at the statistics of what most people retire on, it shows it can be done on much less.

My plan is a mix of part time commercial fishing, rentals, leasing out my business, leasing out quota/permits, SS, and interest income.

Plan on staying on the boat until 55, then hiring my replacement until 65, then leasing the business.

I was going to get into rentals...I was a builder after all.....but for me I didn't see the upside, it looked like I would be making a job for myself. I know it works for others. good plan you have....bob

Getting back to the point of the thread, a million bucks in liquidity isn't very much these days. I'm also a bit surprised that $3.6 million will let you live "like a millionaire" although that's compared to 1980, after the massive inflation of the 70's, so it's probably accurate enough.

I do remember when eccentric billionaire Mr. John Beresford Tipton gave away $1,000,000 to some person every week - all taxes paid. In the late 1950's and early 60's a million dollars really would set someone up to live high on the hog for life - if they didn't live too long. $20,000 - $25,000 would buy a very nice house and $3,000 - $4,000 would get you a brand new Corvette. Even in 1970 a hot shot Hemi 'Cuda started at around $3,300.

At least until the mid-70's when home prices just about doubled. Even 15 years later in 1990 you could buy a new Ford F150 XLT Lariat for $14,000. Try that today.

Point is, unless you have liquidity coming out your ass you can't just sit on it (the liquidity or your ass) and expect to live well until some unknown age of death. You still need to keep that money diversified and protected against both inflation on the one hand and large stock market bears on the other.

My best friend used to be a real estate broker. He said you would be amazed at the rich people in this town that are upside down on everything they own. He said you can never tell what someone is worth looking at where they live,what they drive, or the toys they have.
I used to hunt and trap on an old man's place and visited with him often.
He was a millionaire, He lived in a small house trailer overlooking Eleven Point River. Had a 14 foot jon boat tied up with a 7.5 mercury on it. He retired at 40.
He told me then everytime you make or get some money save some of it and put it to work. He was right.

I think these days you need at least a couple million to retire. That number will grow a bunch when the US gove goes bankrupt in the next decade. A million isn't what it used to be.


Most ballers with expensive cars, houses, boats are the most broke dicks in the country. I think the average million+ folks drive a F150 and live a more upper middle class life.

A sister told her two boys that while they were still in high school. One took her seriously, became a millionaire by age 40. He takes his family on outdoor oriented vacations,, has 3 squared away sons..

The other would work enough to set aside a bit, then travel. He married young, his wife did the same. After 5 or 6 years they built a tiny house and started a family. Now he has a good job and is living comfortably, their 5 kids have a great upbringing with a lot of outdoor activities.

I think both approaches worked well.

It depends GREATLY on where you live. Not only because of the 24K in property taxes, but all the other costs of living associated with daily life, from mechanic’s hourly rates to having to pay to park to go shopping or a $500 a month AC or heating bill. In a place with moderate taxes and a reasonable cost of living, $40K after taxes and no house payment isn’t a great luxury, but enough to eat well and not impoverish over time.

The big wildcards, of course, are health care or nursing home expenses. They’ll crack the nest egg in a hurry.

My retirement account was doing well before Bidenomics hit. We lost a bunch in the slide, but it recovered slightly and is holding steady. What hurts now are the prices of everything. Just got a quote on auto insurance, $3200 a year for the truck, older jeep, wife's car, and our 25' travel trailer. Spent $421 bucks last week for a full cart of groceries ! Stopped at Sonic the other night, one burger, a corn dog, large fries and drink was $18.46 ! I don't know how long the country can survive this crap.

If I could time travel and return, I'd go to the future, look up my obituary, and come back knowing just how long my resources have to last. Could die tomorrow or last another 25 years. That uncertainty keeps me on the conservative side.

I live in a subdivision surrounded by million dollar plus homes. The retirees own them free and clear, the young folks, its doubtful. Including housing in net worth here it is easy to be a millionaire. But, I don't know anyone taking trips to Africa. Liquid cash available- who knows.

The government keeps saying it want more affordable housing constructed, it is essential! When asked the government spokesmen admitted they didn't have a definition of "affordable housing".

I couldn't believe it when he told me he wouldn't spend a penny of it. I thought he was nuts until he explained how you could live a decent life just from the income it could generate and how some wealthy folks who live in regular, middle class homes and work regular middle class jobs are actually millionaires who will become even more wealthy by not spending all their income on status symbols and other flashy crap. As I got older I've seen it myself and always took that lesson to heart.

I've heard it said of millionaires that the first generation earns it, the second generation grows it, and the subsequent generations spend it. That has been, pretty much, a reflection of what I've seen, although sometimes the second generation is so deep into drugs and alcohol that they burn through a lot of the capital before the third generation gets their chance to spend much of it.

I know a guy whose family sold their business for around $40M. He is deeply into drugs and alcohol. His older sister was also deeply into drugs and alcohol, but she died in her 50s. His younger brother is also deeply into drugs and alcohol, but lives the life of a ski bum and mountain biker, winters at Grand Targhee followed by northern hemisphere summers at Thredbo. The brother that I know spends money in amounts that make you shake your head. Private charter jets to Europe. Private yacht charters on the Caribbean and Mediterranean. At one time he had a Saracen armored car. He has at least 6 houses or condos in places like Telluride, Palm Springs, and Palm Beach that I know of that he pays caretakers to maintain. He has 2 daughters who are in their 20s, but he doesn't take care of them because they remind him of his first, of four, failed marriages. He is toxic, living proof that money doesn't buy you happiness.

If I had generational wealth and my kids were irresponsible, I'd put a fair portion of it into a professionally managed trust for each of them that would make distributions in amounts that would allow them to have comfortable lives, but not be able to piss away the capital.

8% on $3,600,000 would be $288k a year without touching principal. Not sure how realistic expecting 8% return over a long period is though. Figure 5% as an easy number, that’s $180k and still a reasonable amount of you don’t live crazy extravagantly.

Wife worked at financial planners office for a year, there was a local doctor who took home over$700k a year and was tapped out on credit and was dipping into his 401k

Average person at retirement age has $476,000 in savings.

The financial industry will try to convince you that you have to work your entire life and have millions of dollars in a 401(k). That is so they can skim their percentage off the top and make money but the reality is you really don’t need as much as you think you do, if you’re not an idiot with money.

Empower says the average retirement account they oversee for people ages 65-70 is $185,858. That’s absolutely nothing! That’s just over $20k a year for 10 years when accounting for gains. Most Americans don’t save.

Depends on who you ask. Someone’s always got more money than you. To some, I’m nothing more than a peasant. The 415(C) limits are $69k this year, with an additional $7500 in the catch-up. I’m under 50, so I can’t do the catch-up, but I have been hitting the 415(c) limits for over 10 years.

I recently completed a post-retired budget on a spreadsheet. Listed everything I could think of, then started guesstimating how much we’d spend on each item per month. Summed it, annualized it, subtracted SS, then multiplied the remainder by 1.3 to account for taxes. Then I divided the result by 0.05 to see how much I needed to generate the result in interest at 5%.

When we tip over the kids get the principal.

Looks like I’ll need to keep saving for awhile.

Not really. We have been doing retirement planning. We owe 0 to anyone. Our bills total $3k/mo. We want $6k/mo after taxes. We will die with more money than we have now.

I turn 61 in a few months. Social Security in 14 months, and in 2 yrs. I get $750 month from a pension. That should be about $2,800 month.. We dont owe anything and out house is 15 yrs old so no major repairs. As of now, we have a fair amount per yr. in dividends from our home made retirement account. Some is old 401K's though. That will bring us to about $60K a year, and $75K yr. after the wife gets her S.S. ( fingers crossedwith S.S though).. We will be fine, only cause I live so cheap . All those millionaires you all talk about, I could make them blush. Snicker. But I like it that way. Millionaires straightening out nails? You mean some people throw out crooked nails? I hang my clothes on the line 12 months a yr. and I live in Wis. They do dry in winter fairly well. Heat with wood . My electric bill was $67 and gas was $19. last month.. I don't always work on my cars anymore though.. I hunt 5 miles from home , fishing hole is 26 mi. A person can live pretty good with quite little. My son works at a " wealth managment firm. He sais " dad, the ones that have money live poor and are the happiest. The trust fund people are seldom happy, always have to complain about something and got their money for free. He sees 1,200 accounts , including his bosses. Monday God gave me a wakeup call. Many times I complain that I cant retire yet. That day , I tore my rotator cuff again . The pain is just unbearable sometimes. I worked 4 hrs. Monday and by Thursday the pain lessened to soreness and was bearable when sanding the oak floor. I was so happy to be back at work and said I would gladly work late into life than live in pain all the time. It was a blessing to be back at work.

Got in equities at 23. Looking at selling off $70k or so for a car I want. No issues here. Missing my gold/silver opportunities... Just fact here.

My wife and I were always self employed. so no pension (or sick leave or paid time off). We did fund our IRAs and saved additional amounts in an investment account. We learned that paying other people to manage our money resulted in less money actually being earned. So we manage our own funds. We were debt free at 45 and we retired at 53, although I worked on limited special projects for another 8 years, mostly to fund capital expenses (pick up, travel trailer, bulldozer, excavator, dump truck, NULA, etc.). We can live on Social Security and next year we both face RMDs. What we have found is that a lot of people underestimate the amount of tax they have to pay in retirement - including on SS and of course on the RMDs. Our taxes are going up a lot next year as we move funds from our IRA to our investment account.

A million invested in the DOW in 1979 is now worth 40-45 million.

A million in a 401K isn't any big deal, especially if it's combined household with you and your spouse. Pretty easy for both of you to combine to a million by retirement time if you can manage your money.

Pretty easy math on pensions. Mostly as long as you live, and maybe longer for your spouse if you go first. No need for a calculator.
