Dallas Seavey had some bad moose trouble ,moose tried to do damage to his dogs or kill them so Dallas Seavey had to shoot the moose. wardens are bringing meat back for the villagers to use . Jesse Holmes was 1st to have trouble with the moose he punched the moose in the nose and was able to get thru then . lucky no one got hurt .

Dallas had to shoot a moose inthe dog team and salvage it by his self. He’s still in first.

He might have a chance!

Pay attention to the dog numbers as they continue north. Dropping 20% of your dog power is no biggey down south where the temps are warm and the snow is slick. But as you get further north along the trail, that below zero snow turns to sand paper on that runner plastic.

Geeze, some of these mushers were down to 13 dogs 150 miles into the race. Dogs dropped that early are a sign of a few possible weaknesses, but not always. Heck, even switching harnesses can throw a dog off, or even catching a bug from other dogs. Or sometimes a good dog gets up there in age, but the musher doesn't realize the dog is struggling until 200-300 miles into the race.

Best of the best: Jesse Royer rolled into Nome in 5th place 2017 with a full 16 dogs. The amount of skill and care to make that possible, is a major accomplishment.

Dan Kaduce did as well, crossing the finish line with all the dogs he started with, in 4th place back in 2022.

It's not a dog race anymore! It's a reality TV show.

I dunno bout that. When Scott Janssen almost froze to death, he was forced to abandon his dogs when he was rescued. Along comes Jason Mackey, untangled a ball of scared, cold dogs. Then proceeds to run 2 fkn teams to the next check point. This was probably one of the most harrowing moments of all time. Lance's skills as a musher, are and were, indescribable:

yes your right ! it now is politics , money and a show . the real reason Dallas got the 2 hr. penalty is because he figure a way that is legal yet to after the rougher area he went thru with his old heavy sled was to switch his heavy sled out to a lighter carbon sled so he could go faster and this was a good plan .so the only thing these race officials decided was to give Dallas a 2 hr. penalty for the poor job of gutting that moose , because Dallas out smarted the race rules with his good plan with the much lighter carbon sled . i hope Dallas still wins the race and this will hurt the race in the future with this stupid penalty , smart officials would have just let it be about the moose gutting job STUPID !

You don’t know much about DLP rules do you? For the rest of us, if we DLP an animal like a moose we have to gut it,
Skin it, qtr it, and deliver it to the troopers. The Iditarod guys all the state ask for is gut it properly. I also would think it would be the brown shirts making that determination if the animal was gutted right.

Not in Fbks. Dog musher shoots a moose,DLP, calls the troopers. Troopers call the next name on the charity list and THEY come take care of the moose! Person who pulls the trigger rarely has to touch the moose! But he does have to fill out some paperwork.
Hey Mainer, Lance is gone too. it's just not the same race.

A friend up Eagle River Valley keeps bee hives on his deck. I always told him that seemed like a bad idea. It's kinda' like inviting several hundred pounds of bear up to your glass French doors, but what do I know? Sure enough, he had a black bear show up, and after running him off just to have him repeatedly return (including a 12 gauge bean bag round on the rump), he finally killed it with a slug. It drops on the driveway. He calls the Troopers who come, ask for help lifting it into then back of his truck, and away go the Trooper and bear carcass.

No muss, no fuss.

Of course, if it had been me or a Seavey-in-a-hurry, things are different. It's all a crap shoot in the America of today...........

Uh oh sphagettios

Seavey had a dog-stomping encounter with a moose. One of his dogs was critically injured. He was then less than two hours from the Skwentna checkpoint.

He failed to adequately gut the moose. This might be understandable and easily forgivable if he’d turned his team around and rushed his critically injured dog back to Skwentna to get it treated as fast as possible.

But that isn’t what he did.

Instead of turning around, he went an hour and twenty minutes down the trail, hauling the critically injured dog. Camped out for three hours with the critically injured dog. And then spent another two hours on the trail to Finger Lake where he finally sought help for the critically injured dog.

This adds up to six and a half hours the dog was left to suffer (although hopefully, Seavey gave it Iditarod-banned painkillers) when it could have been back in Skwentna in less than two hours and under treatment by veterinarians in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley or Anchorage within three hours.

Dallas`s dog that the moose almost killed is doing fine , Dallas`s back in 2nd place he still has a chance of winning this race and Jesse is in 3rd place . Dallas`s dogs are fresher and he still has 15 dogs , the leader has 12 dogs and jesse 11 dogs .

The deal on gutting that someone just doesn't understand at all is that its not FG rules. Its race rules. You follow the race rules. Thats all that governs that part and it what it is.

As to DLP there is a LOT more work involved there. Thankfully the time I had to shoot one it was legal, season etc... so didn't have to use the DLP stuff.

That said if you want to get onto a topic... if you DLP one, then you gut it etc... if you hit it with your vehicle you have to do nothing basically. Seems you still killed it. You should also have to gut and deliver? Neither one was by choice basically.

We wont' know more until its all over anyway. No sense in wasting time really.

I wondered a lot about the issue of turning around instead of running and resting.... That says a lot also. Not everything but a lot. There are issues that are life threatening for sure. Then there are injuries that need attention. No telling exactly where this fell. And it well could have been a moving target so to speak too.

Then the stuff that the moose was left in the trail for others to run over. OTOH have you ever tried to move a dead moose? Without taking at least half of it apart. Was that what it was. Strategy? Who knows.

Then you have how much did it need to be gutted? As noted car kills are never gutted and the meat utilized. There is that. Cold enough... at least get the guts part out but the liver, lungs, heart etc.... would not cause it to spoil really.

Again you have to follow Fish and game rules. But you are in a sanctioned race so whether you like the rules or not you have to follow them.

My personal thoughts ? its bad luck and is what it is. If I was running and won in less than 2 hours I'd want to turn my win over... just how I'm thinking that I would not want to win over a penalty that one only had partial control over.

We will find out all the answers soon enough.

All game laws are online and so easy to look up...

i feel the same way it was bad luck ,a poor B.S. penalty and i would not feel honored winning by a B.S. penalty in any race.

I’m predicting Dallas wins sometime tomorrow morning. Right now he has what appears to be a 60 mile lead.

Foolish to think that a sudden heart failure is the fault of anyone. My neighbor died, just running on a treadmill. My chemistry professor died running a marathon. Both guys essentially died doing what they love: running.

No different for dogs. These dogs pass rigorous vet-checks right before the race.

Each musher spends an average of $8000 in vet checks, immunizations, medicines and dewormers per year for their kennels. In spite of this, things can happen.

Over 600 dogs started the race this year. Do the math on that.........

Based on in/out times posted. I see it’s been updated.

Lots of strategy and rest times outside of checkpoints.

Do you have GPS on mushers? Pard?

SSS/WDH/Eddie thinks dogs only die in the Iditarod. Like PETA newsletter tells her.

The world is changing and the race can’t keep sponsors. Won’t be much longer.

End the race. Modern day mushers are weak ass little bitches. Couldn’t even run the race unless there’s a groomed trail for them.

Yeah, I've been pretty bored with the race for a good 20 years now, but sometimes enjoy helping trolls make fools of themselves. No storms on the coast will make the race all the more boring.

Seavey wins! You heard it here first. Jimmy Olson!

OK- last I heard he was just 20 miles out, with whosis 3 hours behind.

And another dog croaked. That will give SSS a woody!

All of Dallas wins have been under the 8 hour hold in White Mountain. All of Rick Swensons wins were races that he had to race all the way to Nome. There's a difference.

Yup, everybody in the races knew well ahead of time where the race truly was decided. Everyone knew ahead of time and ran under exactly the same rules for each race.

On second thought, Jeff King in the year of the epic sled dog collapse would probably have preferred to keep his team walking to Nome.

The layover took the heart out of the team...

Yup. Looks like Peta murdered another dog under a false flag operation. How can they pretend to love animals when they kill them to try to false flag a false point of information.

Thank god the race is over. How many dogs will be put to sleep that didn’t perform to their expectations?

Time to write all the individual sponsors and let them know you will not support their business due to their sponsorship of musher and race!

i watch this Iditarod 2024 sled dog race from the beginning to the end on sky cam the one thing i did notice is how every dog musher person understood every dog they had in the race by name and the special care these musher`s gave to each of their dogs in the race . Yes Dallas Seavey won again " his 6th win a new record " but he was sure careful with his sled dogs health ,Dallas even said these sled dogs might not be the fastest but everyone of these dogs have a lot heart and stamina . i remembered this one detail when Dallas would take off each time with his sled and dogs that was kinda neat when Dallas hollered to his lead dog : Arrow ready ! GO ! i have listened to every Iditarod race since it started and the Seavey family when they raced they have always done well and taken great care of their sled dogs too. >sure is another wonderful Iditarod sled dog race i look forward to next years race 2025 !

I have tried, and just can't get interested in this race. To me it is like Baseball, a fun game to play, but not so much to watch. I have owned a lot of dogs, some good and some not so good, Bird dogs, coon dogs, Great Pyrenees, and just dogs. I am not advocating ending the event, just stating how I feel. miles

But it's not over! There are dozens of mushers yet to cross the finish line or scratch, thus endangering more canins and moose to death. Hell, the dogs still have to be flown home, endangering them to crashing.

Life is dangerous. Then you die.

Check out his "brilliance" as WDH while you are at it. He has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt he is an idiot. One choice fact from her is bull moose grow one brow time for each year of life.

He/she is too pathetic to worry about. More a waste of electrons, water, oxygen, and food.

one brow per year. OK SSS is for sure stupid. Wow. Never thought one in AK could be that dumb.

But the dog thing. Thats a paid whine from PETA again. Has ZERO clue about dogs in general. How they are treated. What it means for dogs to do dog things etc... fools. What a shame.

Dude has been posting negative rubbish on the Iditarod threads for years. Not even worth responding to. Dog mushing is the official sport of Alaska. It will remain so, regardless of how racing changes over the years.

Anyhow, shifting back to the race:
This win is unique because Dallas won a race on a sled he built with his own 2 hands. Thats pretty big, he's now into sled design. I agree with his assertions on sled bags and zippers.

He eliminated a sledbag from a "shaving weight" perspective. They do accumulate alot of moisture and snow. He also shaved down the amount of uhmw used. That sht is so heavy.

Regarding zippers, I did the same thing back in 2020. Sewed up a 1680d sled bag that is a roll-top like an old dry-bag. Then you lash with compression straps. Quicker than fking with a frozen/damaged zipper. Saves TIME!

It adds up, I bet he shaved quite a few minutes of fking with a frozen damaged zipper.

Whew! Just finished off sending emails to almost all of the sponsors of this years idiotrod race. It’s worked in the past and with a little work we will get some of them to reconsider.

Lack of sponsors will be the only way to end this death race driven by egomaniacs.

The race started without sponsors. Frankly, getting the big bucks out of it would probably improve it. Sorta' like killing the PFD would make a whole bunch of parasites let go and flake off.

Matt Hall is an outstanding musher I was rooting for him the whole race. He grew up as a second generation musher guiding mushing tours on the Yukon his entire youth.

He continues to be an interior Rockstar, not only mushing all season on glacier tours, but training the best of race dogs.

Built his first cabin when he was 16. Won his first Yukon quest as the youngest of the race.

His father and mother are in their late 60's, still caring for Alaskan sled dogs and running a real guiding expedition kennel.

Caring for sled dogs is how he was raised. Just like any other musher aspires: to care for your freinds. It isn't about "ego" as the anti mushing crowd would claim. It's about Alaskan culture and coaching the team to accomplish things unimaginable.

For those who think Dallas is such a great guy........he had a dog seriously injured at the beginning of the race. He could have mushed a couple hours back to the previous checkpoint and had the dog picked up. Instead he drove a couple hours towards the next checkpoint and rested with the seriously injured dog in the sled. Then drove the rest of the way to the next checkpoint where the seriously injured dog was finally taken to town. Dallas is all into WINNING! He should also be cited for not properly taking care of the moose he shot.

Why nome? Just because the race ends their does not make nome sled dog capitol of Alaska. That would be Willow, sometimes I wonder about you lower 48 boys.

Mr thumbs,
You do know the old saying about assume?

Lots of garden islands, one must pay attention to know WTF is going on.

http://fairbanks-alaska.com/fairbanks-history.htm

North of the Chena River
The area north of the Chena River was once an island in the middle of the river, bounded on the north by a slough which has since dried up. Called Garden Island, is was home to market gardens and the railroad depot. As Fairbanks grew, it became home to The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the offices and warehouses for the Fairbanks Exploration (F.E.) Company, and the subdivision of Slaterville, an early "bedroom'' community for F.E. employees.

I doubt the Iditarod is going anywhere. A good friend of mine ran it this year. He said it cost him over $17,000 to enter the race. Yes just to enter the race, they had 38-39 teams so yeah do the math. Then if you the spectator want to get video feed and gps tracking that’s $49 bucks. So not sure how they are going broke. I also watched the iron dog (several of us talking about doing the expedition class) for $3200 bucks is your entry fee. With that yoh get gas and 2 stroke oil everything else on the trail is on you. The gps tracking is free and their video feeds come from individuals at the check points. Kimberly Kay in koyuk is probably the most known because koyuk is triple check point. In short both of these events is what defines Alaska outdoor adventure. So don’t let the guy formerly from Rock Springs Wyoming tell you any different.

Your romantic notions of every village in western Alaska having sled dogs at every house is a noble one. But it’s a false one, for the most part sled dogs have been replaced by snow machines/snogos or as you all in the lower 48 call them snowmobiles in western Alaska. You can go to willow and swing a dead cat and hit 4/5 kennels. The spirit of the Iditarod is being kept alive by individuals living on the road system. Not some rustic villages on Yukon river.

Just like any other troll, if everyone would just quit acknowledging him he'll get tired of being ignored and go away.
Trolls get off on getting people worked up and when it doesn't happen, they get bored and go away.

Oh I dunno. Keep telling him how worthless he is, that type of person is so liberal and weak they finally realize it and go into depression. Besides its good to vent on a liberal idiot.

He even gave up all the contact info link for sponsors so I went and told all of them what a super job they have done and to keep it up. And quite often email AK air to go back to being a sponsor and quit being PC like they are from Seattle or something

Dog killers. All of them. Inhumane how they treat those dogs.

PETA - kills 57% of the dogs it takes in and 72% of the cats.

Of the 49,737 dogs and cats PITA received between 1998 and 2019...?

... 41,539 were killed.

Quite an organization... like the NAZI party.

Almost every musher that's been a target of PETA, none of it made sense.

It equates to online bullying and defamation. They need to be put in check with a class action lawsuit. You can't keep ignoring the sabotage and defamation.

Prime example: A former iditarod musher was targeted over the water dishes. PETA started freaking out, posting all over the internet that the poor dogs were drinking from rusty cans.

Its very common for mushers to use large coffee cans for water bowls. They're plastic lined and no rust forms on the inside of these cans, just on the outside.

But that's what PETA does, they just look at photos or videos on social media, and fkn nit-pick what ever they see. LAZY illogical fkn idiots who have no clue about Alaska.

Another way they get ahold of baseless fodder is through disgruntled dog handlers.

One iditarod musher fired a dog handler for theft. The guy was stealing sht left and right! He's still wanted, but fled the state. He goes to peta and throws out a bunch of slander. PETA gladly posted his lies grievances all over the place.

This makes no sense whatsoever. If there wasn't a trail, the #1 musher would be trudging in front of the team on snowshoes or skis for a large portion of the route. At less than 5 mph in unbroken snow. All the other mushers would be piled up behind the #1 musher. Then it wouldn't be a race.

It would take 25-30 days to get to Nome. People would get lost and dogs would be put at risk.
