He wasn't Karl.
Billy Bob Thonton was Carl, the main character and a bit retarded.

And I'm sure it was spelled Carl.

Only smart Karls know how to spell the name

Somewhere there’s a version of this with him explaining how he came to right it. But basically it’s just as he sang it.

I saw him in concert at a fair. Suzy Bogguss opened for him and had to play an extra hour and a half until Dwight sobered up enough to get on stage.

Once he was up there, he couldn't hardly stand, let alone sing.

One of my all-time favs.

Interesting tidbit, we share the same pant size.

And I only know this because following a local concert one of his groupies told me that he loves to go pike fishing. I was on the Montana pike circuit that summer and even the groupies knew I was hell on pike.

Anywhoo, I take Dewhite pike fishing and he flat slayed the pike. Last cast of the day and he boats an 85lb pike that fought like hell. Dewhite chit his pants when he saw how big the pike was and of course I offered him my pants and he said they fit great.

That is funny, but I am sure you were not amused!

He said once he was heavily influenced by both Buck Owen & Elvis Presley.

Definitely one of my favorites.
And he’s credited with giving Buck Owens a second career later in life.

His live shows were awesome back when Pete Anderson was still his lead guitar player and Producer.
Pet played a mean Telecaster and also co-wrote quite a few of Dwight’s biggest hits.

Got to meet several of his band members once after a concert. Nice guys all.

I was under the impression that Dwight was a vegan, and did not drink.

I also was also under the impression he was a very astute businessman.

I love me some Yoakum.

One early concert I went to after his second album was released, Pete and the band played an hour of rockabilly before Dwight came out. They brought the house down.
Pete played a 1956 Telecaster into a 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb Amp. Doesn’t get much bettter than that ! 👍🏻

Never gave a schit for him, songs or stage presence. Nothing personal, as country music is just not my preference.

Then I heard a 1000 miles from nowhere. Youtube it 8 0r 10 times a year. Glad I can like something about a fellow Kentuckian.

I forgot about Dwight being from Kentucky.
Pretty much the birthplace of great Bluegrass Music.

IIRC, seems like Dwight’s dad owned his own Gas Station.

Oh Dwight, and TX Blues Guitarist Ian Moore must’ve really had to hate the band scenes for that movie, as good as both of them can really play the guitar.

I can vouch this is a true story. I was their as well, couple of boats down fishing with Eddie Rabbitt who was pretty good at catching some fish. He saw Dwight chit his pants.

Saw DY in So-Cal a couple years ago with Chris Stapleton. Yoakam blew the doors off the place. Better than Stapleton, at least that night.

Dwight was from Betsy Layne Kentucky. His family moved to Columbus Ohio like a lot of people looking for work. He graduated from Columbus Northland High School.

My brother was a big fan so we heard D white a lot. I always liked that twangy sound and my 2 favorites: He Sang Dixie (naturally; me being a southern boy) and A 1000 Miles from Nowhere. He did honor Buck with a second career.

We were all jet skiing and celebrating on my 50' luxury houseboat after I had won another Pike tournament when Tiffany came stumbling out of my bedroom asking where Amber went.

It was that moment when we realized she went into town to get more cigarettes.

Like all his work, seen him several times; his recent albums "3 Pears" and "Second Hand Heart" are excellent.

A touch of Tejano.

Yep. He e had ole Flaco Jiménez play on a few of his tunes. Great stuff, Roger!

I’ll bet I haven’t heard Flaco Jimenez’ name in 20 years or more!

Yoakam accompanied Sharon Stone as her date to the 1992 Academy Awards in Los Angeles, California, wearing his signature cowboy hat. But things didn't end well for the couple and they called it quits shortly after. Yoakam kept quiet on his relationship with the starlet, but Stone had no problem telling everyone that kissing Yoakam was like a "dirt sandwich."Their brief affair was over almost as quickly as it had started.

He played a show where I work almost 20 years ago. He arrived on his own bus, wasn't travelling with his band. Arrived at last minute, got off the bus, played, got back on the bus and was gone. His bus driver holding doors for him, came across as arrogant. Not much of a fan.
