Theres a lot of differences in venison, the best in my opinion is the Sitka black tail from coastal Alaska . I have never eaten a poor one in rut or other wise.
Corn fed whitetail are excellent as well. Mule deer are passable. Can’t speak to Columbia blacktail.
I have wild game all my live, sometimes out of necessity, but will readily admit give my choice I will take a good cut of beef or pork over venison any day.
However, sometimes it may depend on the circumstance, there have been a couple of sheep hunts , that after eating nothing but freeze dried meals , sheep ribs over an open willow twig fire was the best meal ever.
