Can anyone help? I am trying to ID a model 70 with a S/N of g23257. I have checked a couple of sites."G" s/n's are post 64 but don't run that low. Pre 64's encompass that s/n but don't have the "G". It is a classic featherweight in 30-06 for $500 supposedly in exc shape. For 500 I may want to jump on this. Thanks, sg

Don't know about the S/N, but if it's a classic FWT in 'excellent' (that's the defining word, and one you must satisfy in person) condition, $500 is not out of line.. In 98%+ condition, they're going for $500-595 on GB. (blue/walnut/classic/30-06) Good rifle.. Good cartridge... Reasonable price.. Who needs a S/N date?

Found this: http://shootersforum.com/showthread.htm?t=39615USRAC Model 70 serial numbers are a bit of a mystery - nothing official ever published. With the push feed guns USRAC continued the post-64 WRA serial number sequence. When they introduced the M70 Classic in the early 1990's they started over at G1 (pre-64 rifles didn't have the G prefix) - how far they went each year and where they stopped I don't know. Bruce

The "G" prefix was added in 1971 to comply with gov't regs. I agree that USRA serial #'s are a mystery!

I think the 'G' was added in 1968 when the mods were made, anti bing slot, steel floorplate, and some others. source is Frank DeHaas book onBolt action rifles

I think the 'G' was added in 1968 when the mods were made, anti bing slot, steel floorplate, and some others. source is Frank DeHaas book onBolt action rifles from The Rifleman's Rifle, by Roger Rule, pg 319: "On August 25, 1971, at serial number 1,028,977, the serial number sequence was given a "G" prefix. This was implemented in compliance with new Federal regulations requiring a letter-coded serial number as an expedient means to manufacturer identification" (Guess the Feds couldn't tell a M70 form a M700. )

I seem to remember the CLASSIC CRF model starting at 5 digits with a G to give them a PRE 64 type number I have a stainless crf in my safe no G 101xxx which would make it a 1950s app model without the G prefix {which it cant be} So they have doubled up on the numerals

Serial numbers on Classic actioned rifles are somewhat of a mystery, but I can say this much. The first production grade Classics were the Super Grades in 1990, followed by the Featherweights in 1992. Of course, Custom Shop Classics were made even earlier. The 29th edition of the Blue Book, shows that Classic serial numbers started at G15000, and shows that the approximate last number for Model 70 Classics manufactured in 1990 to be G16859, and for 1991 G23072, followed by 1992 at G26709. And that is far as they go. To my knowledge, this is the only published information on serial numbers of Classics to date. This information apparently doesn't apply to Custom Shop rifles, as I own a Classic Custom Shop rifle with a G10XXX number, and that model wasn't made before 1996, so apparently Custom Shop rifles either had their own serial number ranges, or are out of sequence. To add even further to the confusion, by 2002, the numbers jumped over the previous "G" numbers. The highest serial number Classic I own with a "G" prefix followed by 6 numerals is a G350XXX, which is a 2000, or possibly 2001 rifle. Then I also own a G241XXXX Classic (notice a 7 numeral number now), which is a 2002 rifle. According to the Blue Book, the "G" prefix was started in 1969, apparently sometime after 925908 and before G941900, thus NO pre-64 Model 70's had a "G" prefix. I am also somewhat at a loss to explain why people don't understand that a rifle with a "G" prefix serial number is a different number than a rifle without a prefix. Hey, this isn't rocket science! Hope this helps.

This one is G23257. It's being pitched as pre- 64. For 500 I would snap it up but since it is a late model version I'm not that excited. I already have a '68 model 70 in 308.
Does anyone know where I could identify the model that I currently have?

From 'Bolt Action Rifles, 3rd edition, by Frank DeHaas, page 482 "Winchester rifles with a number above 866,000, and the letter G preceeding the s/n, are the 1968 version with the anti-bind feature, black chrome floorplate and stainless steel follower." Also from, www.wisnersinc.com/additional_info/Winchester_64_M70.htm, "After the1968 Federal gun control law----, the post 64 guns then carried aG s/n prefix starting near 874,000.

This one is G23257. It's being pitched as pre- 64. Are you sure he's not stating 'pre-64 action'? That would refer to the later classics.. Many potential buyers may not be sure of the definitions so sellers add that little tidbit.. For 500 I would snap it up but since it is a late model version I'm not that excited. I already have a '68 model 70 in 308.
Still, at $500, it's certainly reasonable..
