The hijacked Ukrainian ship loaded with tanks & small arms is being ransomed by it's owner for millions. PIRATES . I just can't believe that the entire world can sit and cry while this goes on. A bunch of petty but well armed thieves is holding the whole world hostage and the governments just sit and let them do it. If stopping it requires leveling Somalia, so be it. The ransom will be delivered to the ship. Doesn't someone have the gonads to make sure that these pirates never reach shore with their loot?

They're taking the cash onboard the ship? Okay, so you give them the cash, which has a GPS traking device inside. Then about half way back, they're met by an AH-64 Apache. Surrender or die.

Big opportunity for some outfit like Blackwater or others, to provide protection on ships in that area.
Wouldn't take a lot on the ships to repel & get rid of the pirates as they attempt to hijack ships.
Can't believe they aren't already doing it.

They're all waiting for us (U.S.) to do it. Why should anyone else risk their people and spend their money when the US will handle it - 'cause no one else has the will.
I'd say its about time we stopped being the World's Police Force and let some of the other whiney bitches start hauling their share. Nobody else wants to be "the bad guy", the enforcer. Screw 'em all.

Seems to me a half dozen 75 mph PT boats with dual-barreled 40mm "pom-pom" semi-automatic WW2 anti-aircraft guns mounted on their bows would handle those "pirates" fairly easily. They'd have the speed to run 'em down fast and the fire-power to blow 'em outta the water in a N.Y. minute without getting close enough for the pirates to return any fire with their machineguns !~!~! I wonder if there are any of 'em left in the "moth-balled fleet" ?!? Of course, a couple of F-18s could "do 'em" even faster...
It's smart to hang around old guys 'cause they know lotsa stuff...

Actually, the French have been taking care of business. They did two operations back in September that sent a loud and clear message; no French flagged ships have been messed with since.
Their Para's did a night time parachute drop a few miles away from a luxury yacht that had been taken. Swam in to close the distance, boarded, killed one pirate and the rest surrendered.
Also, in the same month. They paid off some Pirates, then tracked them back to their home base, and then raided the home base, killed 3 and arrested the rest.

Well past time to
KICK A**
We should state very simple, "we protect our flag, you protect yours" Let each country protect their own flagged vessels.
Remember the pirates do this for the $ ... No money ... no piracy.

The pirates will likely take the money and return to a mother ship. Track it until it's in sight of the cheering crowds on land. Then come in with shock and awe - a squadron of the biggest and loudest fighters we have. Fire it up so that the flames can be seen from here. Put on an air show that they will never forget.

The pirates are based in coastal villages in Somalia. We know where they are.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,469205,00.html This might work for a freighter, but I would not want to be on a tanker throwing Molotov cocktails and taking incendiary / explosive fire back!

China is sending several battle ships to the area to serve as escorts to their cargo ships. I would hope even the dumbest pirate would have the sense to avoid one of those...but maybe not.

As mentioned earlier in other threads, it is against international maritime law to have arms of any kind aboard a merchant ship. In fact, that's largely what the pirates are banking on.
Now that the Chinese say they'll soon patrol this area, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if boatloads of pirates set sail, and are never heard from again. The Chinese are masterful at denial.

The Chinese are masterful at denial. Well mebby the Chinese will shoot the pirates and bill the familys for the bullet! I have to agree with you, the Chinese are the most capable of shrugging and saying, "what pirates"?

Well, actually, no. International maritime law has no such prohibition. Some nations and some ports prohibit "armed" vessels, but some Ma Deuces in removable mounts, which could be secured in arms lockers when in port and used during dangerous passages, should pass muster even there. Its underwriters and vessel owners risk avoidance and the general moral cowardice of the West when faced with determined indigenous peoples. The pirate's port facilities should cease to exist over night.
