I just bought a Remington 375 H&H, what are the better bullets for hunting elk and the like? Barnes is a consideration, what about the Speer and Hornady offerings? I'm looking to extend range so the heavy weights are not what I'm looking at primarily. Loaded length may be a small problem since there is not much room in the magazine. I'll deal with that as it comes though. I have RL-15, H4350 and 4895, will these be good with the lighter weight bullets?

I'm also putting the barreled action in a CDL stock, any suggestions there? Will bedding be enough or should I have crossbolts added? Thanks any help will be appreciated.

BTW I like the 375! Still adore my 35 Whelen too. What a pair of rifles.

I was just starting to work up loads for my 375HH before I had to sell it (job loss). It liked RL-15 and Hornady 270gr SPs. I tried IMR4895 and it did OK but RL15 was much better. I never had a chance to carry it in the woods.

As far as the stock goes, I would buy a CDL magnum stock since it will already come with two crossbolts. Stocky's Stocks has them in stock for only $197. Typically, shipping is $13.00 or so. If it is anything like mine, it weighed 8.75 all up (Leupy DD, Leupy 1.75-6, sling and 3 cartridges). Recoil was a little north of my 9 pound 338WM and that would make me want to have the extra crossbolt.

I like the 260 Partition with RL 15. I have used this load in 2 of my own 375 and a buddys. All have shot this combo well. You can get 2750 in a 24" barrel w/o leaning on it to hard. We have only used this bullet on black bear, and the bears dont even seem to slow it down, just whistles on through. With the 270 TSX you can get 2750, also with RL 15. I have tried H4350, IMR 4350, IMR4064, H4895, but RL15 is THE powder for the midweights. I have a box of 270 interlocks, but havent loaded them up yet. The 260 accubond might be worth looking at, if you are going to try and squeeze every once of trajectory out of the Ol' Brit Once you get a load worked up, get off the bench and shoot from field positions. Your shoulder will thank you. Have fun, its great cartridge.

For the past 20+ years I have loaded a 250 gr Sierra to a bit over 2900 fps in the 375 H&H. I use it as a practice bullet,but hear through the grapevine that many out west like it for elk hunting,and that it does very well on those animals.

For hunting, I substitute a 250 gr Bitterroot,and having used it on Alaskan Brown Bear, know that it is more than enough for anything that walks in North America.If I had no Bitterroots, I would substitute a 250 gr Swift Aframe.

These loads,when zeroed 3" high at 100 yards, are down about 4" at 300,and about 13" at 400,making them as flat shooting as a 270 Winchester-150 gr load.

In the past I used 4064 to get these velocities,but have switched to RL15.No secret it is about as good as it gets with these lighter bullets from the H&H round.

A friend dumped a big eland on its' nose at over 300 yards with the 235 Barnes X started at a bit under 3000 fps; one shot DRT.

I am planning an elk hunt in northern BC for next fall,and I will take the 375 with the 250 Bitterroot. I suspect it will work just fine.

Thanks fellas, so I am on the right track. I'll probably start with reloader 15 then and look the bullet situation over some more. I scoped it last night so I could start checking accuracy. Himmerll my rifle will end up looking pretty much like yours did, I'm running a 2.5-8 on it and warne QD's with the CDL stock which I already bought. It is a standard not a magnum, I'll have it bedded and see how that holds up. Now lets hope it shoots as good or better than my 35!

One more question fellas, on the bigger bores about whether to free float the barrel or neutral bed it. Which is the way to go? Seems like I read that on here at one time that possibly neutral was better for the larger stuff.

The 250 and 300 gr. Sierras are excellent elk bullets, a lot of the locals around here use thoses 250 gr. Sierras and swear by them, and they sure do work, they always show them around at the coffee shop..The all are perfect little mushrooms and the 250 gr. at about 2800 FPS shoots flatter'n a flitter up to 350 yards or so...I shot one Mule Deer with one and it made a nice quarter size exit hole, lots of blood loss and the deer went down at the shot...Meat damage was minimal..Its a good'un on deer.

I have seen the 300 gr. Sierra used in Africa and the PHs like them real well...

RL-15 and IMR-4064 are my favorite 375 H&H powders...IMR-4064 is usually the most accurate powder in a .375 H&H based on the number of 375s that I have played with..It always comes through and it get good velocity also...RL-15 has run a close second.

My M70 barrel currently is neutral in a syn stock. I have also had this same gun in a hogue that was free-floated. The POI changed, but its preference in loads didnt. I could see no advantage accuracy wise with one over the other. The M70 375 barrels are a bit beefier than the M700 ones I have seen, but I would expect similar results.

My 375 has a floated barrel in a Brown synthetic stock. It shoots very accurately.The other day it stuck two Sierra's and one Bitterroot into about an inch.

Ray says what I have heard from the Idaho boys as well. The 250 Sierra is a good bullet;accurate,too.

I may have to try the Sierras on an elk foray sometime. I've used the 270-gr TSX with wonderful results in Africa but all shots were well under 200yds and my load is quite a mild one. I have to say though that it is a wonderfully well-balanced cartridge and more comfortable to shoot than my 340 and doesn't give up much in trajectory at 300 yds. and under but does it with more bullet weight.

I should add that mine is a Blaser R93; yea, that racy, continental thing that is not even CRF and hard to look at by traditional aficionados. All it does is shoot teeny-tiny groups and contrary to urban myth the ubiquitous Namibian, red dust did not even make it hiccoup.

I agree with what atkinson said about powders for the .375 H&H completely but would add Reloder 19 and Winchester 760 for high velocity loads with 300 grainers. My own .375 likes 67 grains of IMR 4064 with every 300 grainer I have tried. Reloder 15 has worked well with 285 grain Grand Slams and 270 grain Hornadys.

I think I will start with RL-15 and pick up some 4064 to kick things off. The sierra sounds good and in line with what I am looking for. Most of the time I shy away from sierra due to their bullets in smaller calibers being somewhat soft. Not really from experience just from what I hear. They are accurate and that I know from experience. Thanks fellas, this is the way I usually start load developement by asking questions on here and AR sometimes. It helps narrow things down alot.

Guys wanted to show it off with the new stock I got from clos on here. It looks alot better to me now.

That looks great! Much better than the plastic stock it originally wore. I can't undertand why Remington doesn't make a rifle just like that. They always take the cheap tupperware route.
