I asked this in the gunsmithing section, too, but maybe I'll get a faster answer here....
Was the original tang safety Ruger M-77 in 6mm Rem a long action or a short action?

Only ever saw one and I'm sure it was short.

I thought it would be, but it is one of those "slightly longer" rounds like the .257 Roberts and 7 x 57, so I wasn't 100% sure....

Short action. The case of the 6mm is a little longer than the .243's, but the maximum SAAMI overall length is 2.825", which fits neatly into a short action magazine.

Yes, 3rd on it being a short action.
My son's BIL has one, and I was disappointed that my late tang 7x57 is a long action. But it is still a very nimble, light and good shooting gun.....

Mine is a short action, thats all I've ever seen in Ruger. I wish it was a long action, I can't load it out as long as I like to. I know they fit in a short action but they just seem better in a longer action to me. I had a Rem. 600 one time and it was slightly longer than the Ruger.

It was a short action. Mine was a '200th year of American Liberty' model I acquired in 1977 and I'm still kicking myself for not having kept it. A friend has it and I'm still trying to figure out a way to get it back.

It was my first rifle! It is a short action. I still have it but it morphed to an Rugington. It has had 4 Rem takeoff 7 Rem Mag barrels over the last 20 yrs. The barrels get setback and rechambered to 284 win. The rifle sits in a the old discontinued Mickey Ultralight stock. Even the magazine has been altered, it is now 3.1"
I saw another old M77 tang safety in 6mm rem last year but the guy selling it wanted too much. He was asking $600, so I passed.

The 6mm was apparently conceived as a short action cartridge by Remington: I have a first year of production Model 700 and it has the short receiver. Made me mad: I always had to single-load my favorite spitzer varmint bullet, the 85 gr. Sierra, because it wouldn't fit in the magazine when seated just shy of the lands, as I wanted it. Those same cartridges were just shy of fitting the magazine in my pard's Ruger Varminter, as well.

my 77 tang safety .257 is a long action, I wish they had made them in 6 m/m but, I don't think the ever did. Why would they make the .257 in a long action and not the 6 m/m, makes no sense.

The .257 Roberts is essentially the 7x57 necked down. The 6mm Remington is essentially the .257 Roberts necked down.Fairly early on Mauser necked the 7x57 down to 6.5x57,and then necked that down to 6x57 ,but it never gained any interest.Just shows there almost never is anything new under the sun.Basically the same cartridge arrived at from two different directions. Since all three really are basically the same cartridge,it really makes no sense to offer them in different action lengths.
