My favorite to shoot is the Rem Hunter. (I have a 7 Rem Mag in it.)
The best to carry is the mountain rifle. But it kicks like a mule with a 270 in it.
I have a sporter too. It isn't my favorite.

My favorite is the Classic, followed by the Mountain Hunter, followed by the Sako Classic (needs mods).
I could live with the Classic, Mountain, and A-5 and never need another pattern.

Change the mountain to the compact and I agree! I suspect if more people tried the compact, the enthusiasm for the mountain rifle would lessen. Completely subjective of course, but the compact is a very nice little stock.
Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

The Remington Hunter is styled after the Sako 75. If you've never handled one -- it fits me better than any other rifle I've ever shouldered. I'm 6', 185# btw. It's a great design and McMillan inletting one for the Remington actions is brilliant.

I know this is an old thread but I will ask anyway.
What is the difference between the compact, hunters edge and mountain rifle stocks?
I don't see the compact listed on the website.

The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.
Will Munny: We all got it coming, kid.

Are the compact and hunters edge the same except for the construction?

I've always been partial to the Mountain Rifle stock, but I think for my next short action I'll be ordering a McMillan Remington Hunter in Edge fill. Monashee

Can anyone measure the length from the center of the rean action screw to the end of the forearm on a mountain rifle and a compact (edge)?
