What the .44 can do is remind us that the short old Idaho cowpuncher with the tall hat was right.

deflave: "OSOK, 7.0gr's of Unique gives me 900fps with the RCBS 250-K boolit. Although mine drops them at about 260gr's. I like the slim grips on mine. Points and shoots really well for me. Although the sharp checkering does rub the hand a little raw after a few cylinders. Travis" Yep, mine come out at 260 as well and I discoverd three things at the range with this revolver yesterday: 1) I need to shoot some hot loaded jacketed bullets through it and then clean with some JB bore paste to burnish 2) my bullets need a second coat of liquid alox (only had a thin coat from the sizing) and 3) the grips are too slim for my liking - and as you say, the checkering is abrasive. I think I could grow to like the slimness if the checkering was'nt so danged sharp. I ordered some nice rosewood grips from Ruger's on-line store yesterday - looked all around for replacemnt grips and theirs were the nicest for the price IMHO. They do have some checkering but its not up at the top and these are wood, so I can knock the tips off of the checkering if needed. We'll see how they feel on the revolver. I'm hoping they're a little beefier than the issue ones. ------------- Hobie! Post a link to your blog on these pistols Its a great write-up IMHO. And I think the naysayer's reply has been addressed well enough. Needless to say, variety is the spice of life. ETA: here's a pic of the grips from Ruger - they don't look especially thicker but are definately much smoother than the sharp plastic ones - and they look really classy to boot!

I have a 4 5/8, waited several months to get it. I've fired a very few groups with the following: .44 Russian, 3.5 Trail Boss, 180 Hornady swaged TCFP .44 Special, 6.3 W231, 240 Hornady LSWCHP .44 Special, 7.7 Unique, Valiant 240 LSWCBB
All 3 loads gave encouraging results, with more shooting to come. The Russian load is just plain fun.

I bought one of the flat top 44 mags that Ruger issued, same frame. My wife has the 357 and they look identical apart from the barrel bore. Both my wife and I really enjoy shooting the 44 mag, I think it's a hoot to shoot. I have never seen my wife grin so wide as the first time she shot it! I can understand what some say about the grips having sharper checkering but I have never found it to be a problem. I don't feel the need for a 44 special but I understand those who do, I love the revolver in 44 mag. The frame is more comfortable to me than either the superblackhawk or the redhawk.

If you want some grips, you need to check out Cary Chapman @ clccustomgrips.com. I just got my new set in and they are awesome in looks and fit and finish.

I really want one of these Ruger .44 Special Flat Tops but no dealer around here seems to be able to get their hands on one.
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

derby those are really nice too! The thing about the Ruger is its a Skeeter Skelton model - maybe not officially, but its almost exactly the same configuration that he touted. That makes it special.
It's also a really handy size and has adjustable sights so that you can dial the gun into the chosen load.

Congrats on the new 44 Spl, that's really nice. I love the 4 5/8" barrels. Had my SBH 44Mag cut to that length.
In my 44 Mag, I usually run cast 240 SWC over 11.0gr Unique for about 1100 fps as an everyday load.

My answer to the grip issue was a Hogue. Yeah, a bit clunky looking, but it sure is sweet to shoot. I dressed it up a bit with a Bowen Arms rear sight, Belt Mtn locking oversize cylinder pin, and steel ejector rod housing.

Am I reading this right, 11 grs of Unique with a 240 gr slug in the 44 special!! I hope you don't shoot many of those loads.
Oops, I see its a cut down 44 magnum not a 44 special.

MM,
My general purpose load is 10 grains Unique and a 240 cast SWC.
I can attest to the fact it will kill muledeer, hogs, armor plated Idaho Jackrabbits, badgers etc.
Unique and cast bullets are perfect for .44s.
