I only deer hunt in the Adriondacks and use a carbine 7600 with Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7. From 15 feet to 300 yards this combo has never failed me, no matter what the conditions.

I several 7600's. My 35 Whelen and 300 Savage wear Leupold 1-4x20's. My 257 Roberts wears a 1.5-4.5 Nikon Monarch. My 35 Remington carbine wears a Trijicon Accupoint 1.25-4. Also, my great-uncle has been shooting a 700 BDL 7mm Rem Mag that wears a Leupold 1.5-5x20, which has been on it for as long as I can remember and he has been everywhere with that rifle. The low power scopes are perfect choices for the 7600's, and they really shine on the carbines! I have yet to be sorry for using low power scopes.

I've had a Model 6 in 30-06 for a lot of years. It started out with a Swarovski 1.5x6x42 with a 4a reticle on it for bear hunting in Canada. It also has had a 1.5x5 Leupold with the German 4 reticle. Now it wears a 3X Leupold. Any one of those scopes work very well for woods hunting or shooting across clear cuts.

elelbean Here's an older 4X Redfield on my 7600 in 284 Winchester. It has been on a couple of 760/7600 carbines as well. Good old scopes and tough as nails.Just the ticket for woods as well as fields.Easy to find on the used market for well under a C note. I have two others in the Widefield version in 4X & 6X. Another option would be the new Weavers without going to the expense of the Grand Slam. BTW, I love Leupies and have a few as well but these old scopes just keep on tickin'.

I've made a decision and will get a Leupold VX-3. What would be your preferred reticle....German #4, Heavy Duplex or Duplex?

I'd prefer the Heavy Duplex over the others. It picks up faster and can be picked up in dimmer light than the Medium Duplex. It has the advantage of being useful to range deer and other animals that the 4a can't do. E

The average hunter thinks a 4x Leupold is super-bright, because he looks through it at noon, but a 4x Leupold is actually relatively dim. (This doesn't mean, however, that it isn't a great hunting scope for certain purposes). I have to concur with JB here as well and going with a VX2 or the new VX3 would be a much wiser choice. Either the HD or German #4 would be best for low light hunting.
