I see more bears in the fall, they seem to be more concentrated and easier to target. That said, I look forward to the spring hunt way more. By far my favorite time of the year to be out.
Went for a pretty good hike today, right around fifty degrees and no snow three thousand feet above the river. Really going to be a different spring season around here.

I keep trying to talk myself out of one of those 338 RCMs. The package just feels right. If they had a 358 RCM it would be a done deal.

DK, Just about every mountain range in the state has good black bear hunting....every bear pic I've posted were public land bears, forest service mostly and a few on state land. My advice is lose the crowd...the farther off the roads and trails you get the better luck you will have. It's a hard hunt with a lot of walks back to the truck in the dark. But its a great time of year to be out in the mountains getting the winter rust off. Northwestern Montana probably has the highest concentration of bears per square mile... Pat is that a Montana bear or north across the border? I'm thinking it's a baiter from somewhere? Thx Dober

I have to say it feels right... shoots right... and is right for hunting big hairy critters in thick stuff or any place a shorter, handier rifle would be useful or preferred. I got the stainless/synthetic version, topped with a Leupy 3-9X40 with LR Duplex reticle. Zeroed at 200 with the 225 grain SST,it's only a little more than 8 in. low at 300 with approx. 2220 ft. lbs. of energy remaining. Lighter loads obviously shoot a bit flatter than that.

Mark, That pic was given to me by a friend who used to guide on Vancouver Island. He said it was taken on a spring hunt and weighed over 500 pounds...skull was close to 22" green. Definately a pig!! Can barely see his ears....

Top one squares just under 7 feet and according to MFWP, aged at 15 years. The bottom one is just over 6 feet and aged at 7 years. It's a long shot, but I'll pack a trout rod and hit some remote lakes too to keep myself busy. It's been a very warm winter, so you never know. I need to get the legs moving anyways, and it beats walking on a treadmill in the gym..
