Tony-I couldn't get the sound working on your video to hear the type of call you used?
Also, what kind of an area are you puttin up the trail cam to get pics? Natural food area of bait?
Thx Dober

Dober,
I put the call down to grab the camera....I was using a fawn bleat call. The bear was about 150 yards, 1/4 away from me. When I hit the call, it did a 180 and circled down wind. If you notice on the video, it is looking around as if to say WTF, this is supposed to be an easy meal????
Was too small to shoot. It actually ended up right at the base of the tree I was in. (right after I stopped the camera)
I hunt the edge of a swamp. Trail camera is settup there. So the answer is natural settup. Can't bait in Va.
I envy you Mt guys....spot and stalk for blackies looks like the way to go.
In Va., it is pretty much hit and miss on bears. The advantage we have is you can shoot them in archery, muzzleloader and rifle seasons. They are usually taken while deer hunting. Although they frequent the swamp I usually hunt and see them quit often.
I have been passing them up for the past few years. That is until I run accross the bruzer I caught in the last video.
Just a matter of time before we cross paths. He should be bigger this year.
Tony

Yeha I'd love to see you put the arrow to that last one. Do you have much for acorns in the country?

Tons of acorns....all hardwoods : hickory, red oak, white oak........
Some years there is too much, deer don't have to move at all to feed. Years like that you really lean on the rut.
Also, bears are active pretty much the entire season. Have seen them in early Jan., which is the end of the Va. deer season.

Forecast is showing 20 inches of snow above 6500ft tonight. Could be a fun spring

It snowed a little in Kalispell. I'm hoping it'll be a wet spring, or else we'll be in trouble with fires, and the flyfishing will suck

As of yesterday there's at least one out in my neck of the woods. Should be in a pretty good spot to hunt in a couple weeks as well.

Many people say that the first bruins out are the big boars, to date and in watching them and being a student of them for 30+ years I've not found that to be true.
Generally I've found that for most of this state that may 13th is the magic time. That meaning that I feel that there's a vast majority of the bruins out at that time.
I would agree that the large boars are not the first to show up, and after 39 Spring seasons up here, we have pretty well determined the 15th of May is the magic day. Interesting that we are so far North of you and the dates so close. Ted

Bout 9 dayz and counting, and plenty of white coming down today. Thinking that 4th of July will be about good bruin time this year...grin
Was out for a Sunday stroll, some plenty of other critters but no bruins but did see a nice track.

7 days.... Too bad the ex got the digital cameras in the papers Mark, you're going to have to start "The Official 2010 Spring Bear" thread this year. I'll be shooting gophers in Travis' neighborhood for the opener anyhow.

Ah, thinking this thread will do just fine for followup on how the seasons going.
Check out Walmart for a cheapy digi cam, I've been around a couple decent ones for less than 100 bones.
Side note, to me the real bruin season opens May 13th anyway, so blow those lil rodents beak off. And be careful to not fall too hard off Lee's Log...grin (tis a local Bullhook Btms joke)
