If you stick with the larger 16 oz bottle and use the plastic base, they're fairly stable, but not as much as a shorter stove, of course. The smaller tall bottles can go over easily, though. The larger ones are also less prone to freezing up because they have less surface area.
I'm not inclined to pack either size around in a pack, though. They're pretty good for goat, llama, etc. packing when an extra pound won't hurt.

I know exactly what you mean. I have a very big affinity for the best of older technology, from tube radio and tube hi-fi, to old battle riffles and now perhaps camp stoves. Danger Will Robinson, danger.
