No words of mine can hope to convey to you the ringing joy and hope embodied in that spontaneous yell: The Americans are coming; at last they are coming!
I've had an Encore since about "97" or so & it is a fun system to tinker with. The barrels I have so far are a 7-08 24" factory and a .454 Casull 15" pistol barrel. The 7-08 shoots around an inch with no load development and the cannon has not had any real development yet either but is at least "minute of small pieplate" with the wide open sights.
I've so far gotten the oversize hinge pin which tightened up the slop a bunch and gotten the EZ lap stone & spring to do a trigger job soon. Both were from Mike Bellm's site/store.
I still pick the SUCKS 7 Mag. or the new MRC 25-284 as my "go to" but I'll eventually use the Encore to put somethin' in the freezer.... So many choices so little time.. Good shooting, Bruce

I bought my first Ruger #1 in 1978. It was 1-V in 7mm Mag. It didn't take me long to learn that it was too heavy to hunt with. I sold it in 1980. Shortly thereafter I bought my 2nd #1. And a fair amount of them have passed thru my hands since. It took me 25 years of buying, selling, and trading to accrue the following collection. Currently I have in the vault:

Believe it or not, that is a factory piece of wood that I had Harvey King strip off the glossy epoxy finish from and put an oil-type finish on. It is shooting pretty well, too, having averaged .670" for the last five 3-shot groups I've shot with it.

Note the hammer coming straight out of the wood. It's in 40-70 Sharps straight and I probaly have shot 15,000 times. #3 A rifle I built for my youngest boy. It's also a 40 cal and based on a 444 Marlin case. #4 A 45 cal bullet muzzle loader. It shoots a 410 grain grease groove bullet and is loaded thru a false muzzle. It has a pop up tang sight and is based on the Alex Henry sporting rifles. It can shoot a 3" group at 200 yards. #5 a Flntlock English style sporting rifle. .54 Caliber.

Whoa there LRF, surely your not going to post that picture and not give us anything more? Especially that 40-70ss. I'd love to see some close-ups and maybe an open action picture. If you don't mind I'd like to hear how you arrived at the design.

LRF, that is very interesting. Looks a lot like a Borchardt on top in front. What did you do with the mainspring since there is no lockplate? Is the stock thru-bolted or does it bolt vertically through the wrist like a Sharps?
Very nice.

The stock has a thru bolt. The mainsring is inside on the lower tang. The hammer has a shaft attached to it that fits thru the side of the stock into a tumbler located inside. The shaft and hammer are supported by a bearing that is behind the hammer and you can't see it. Hope my explaination make sense.

LRF, makes good sense. Thanks, and if I might say that rifle is very nicely done!

them's some fine pieces. you are blessed with skill, daring and imagination, lre. family owned machinery get you started? i'd like the whole story, please, illustrated. ain't asking for much, am i?
Ok No I come from a family of bakers. We had guns and we hunted. When I got out of the service after Vietnam, I became a toolmaker. I raised my sons by myself and didn't have money so I just started designing and building my own rifles. If you had a question on one of the rifles shown I can answer it.
Save the Earth...its the only planet with chocolate!
ah, a toolmaker. i much admire and appreciate such skills - because i don't have them, nor the machinery on which to develop such expertise. but i wouldn't put you to the trouble to go into great detail. if, in the future, you'd be so kind as to attach some close-up photos, i'd sure enjoy looking at them - and i'll bet a bunch of other guys would, too. i maintain that a well-crafted firearm with sound lines is one of the finest examples possible of industrial art.
That is a fine looking rifle. Nothing beats a good looking falling block.

No I'm sorry I don't. If I take it apart some time I will take the photos. Did you have a special want for these? What I mean if you want to see how it works that may be easier to give. After all I do have all the drawings. Let me know. Thanks

no, no, lrf, just curiosity. firearms industrial art fascinates me like music does. i can sing passably but cannot read music nor play an instrument. i can shoot pretty well and bed a bolt rifle, but i couldn't do such machine work. i hope that parallel works. sign me an admirer of your skills.

Handi-rifle in 243 Win H&R Buffalo Classic in 45-70 Ruger #1H in 405 Winchester
They're all shooters, but believe it or not, the Buffalo Classic is the real drill. That 32" barrel really gives you a great sight radius.
"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." (Prov 4:23)
Keith-how are you doing with loading for that 405? Remember you asked me about loads so would like an update if you have any info. I have the single shot I made in 405 if you remember.
Save the Earth...its the only planet with chocolate!
I have started out on reloading, but I did not have a shell plate for my case trimmer, nor the pilot, and believe it or not, the cases were overlength after the initial firing of the factory rounds. I have jimmied what I have to trim a few of them, but I haven't had the opportunity to get to the range. Hopefully this week it will be calm. I am using 300 gr Hornady SP and a case full of H4895, and also a case full of Varget. Looking forward to it! I have court twice this week, so that cuts out Tuesday and Thursday, and then there's Bible Study on Wednesday, so that leaves Monday or Friday, weather permitting.
I had to pull some 300 gr Barnes X bullets out, because someone said that they could not get any velocity out of the Barnes without excess pressure signs, and I think my load was a little too stiff. I am backing it down a notch or two and trying it again. I love the #1H. Good shooter, even with factory fodder. I also bought a box of 41 mag pistol bullets to try.
Not having any success in getting cast bullets shipped from the USA. Most of the manufacturers will not ship to Canada, and the .411 bullets are not a real hot item in Canada yet. The joys of being an oddball.
"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." (Prov 4:23)
I'm interested in your .405 loads too Keith! I use .405 brass trimmed 1/10" for my Hepburn in .40-70 Sharps Straight. I'm working on two cast bullet loads of 330, and 400 gr. right now. I need to get to the range this week to see how the latest loads shoot!
Antiue Marlins and single shot rifles! NRA Life OAC Member HAMF Member
Now I would think the loads that Keith is shooting in his #1 and me with my falling block may potentially be a bit stiff for your Hepburn. JMHO I also have a falling block that I made which is in 40-70 2-1/2" straight. I shot 330 grain paper patch with 5 grains 4759 and 55 grains of cartridge black. I used it for 600 yard shooting.
Save the Earth...its the only planet with chocolate!
Well, today was not the day for shooting. Lawn care ate up my day, as well as court preparation. Work is scourge of the shooting class.
I am using a 300 grain Hornady with 58.0 grains of Varget and 57.0 grains of H4895. That is from the Hodgdon site, and it is a little less than max. I'm sure the #1 will suck those up with ease. A weaker action may not, but I'm unfamiliar with the Hepburn.
I will defer to LRF's opinion.
Looks like Wednesday will have to be the day.

Now I would think the loads that Keith is shooting in his #1 and me with my falling block may potentially be a bit stiff for your Hepburn. JMHO
Thanks for the info! Since I don't know what your loads are for the .405, I guess I can't say if they are a "bit stiff" for the Hepburn. Although the Hepburn is a true falling block also, it is not in the class of a Ruger #1, and I wouldn't use loads that push the limits of a #1. Most .405 loads are not too hot for a Hepburn, unless you're pushing the limits of that cartridge. Thanks again! By the way, that's a nice looking Falling Block Works rifle! It is a FBW isn't it?
The typical Hornady factory fodder is supposed to be running in the 45K pressure area. I am guessing from the Hodgdon load data that my loads are in that range. If it handles those okay, I may add a little just to see what it'll really do, although a 300 gr bullet at 2250-2300 fps ought to do the trick on deer, moose and bear at moderate ranges. If not, I can always step on some loads for the old 45-70.
"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." (Prov 4:23)
Marlinman, as shootist says the factory Hornady are low power and designed to fire in any gun orginally chambered in it. The Hepburn may take them but it was designed and chamber primaly in Black Powder cartridges and even a low power 405 is stiffer then the black powder. Care would be the wise rule.
The gun is not a FBW. Design and made everything. I don't rifle the barrels for the most part but I have. I built it about25 years ago. It's on it's second barrel and I have third in the wings if even it is needed.
Marlinman, the Hornady factory loads are loaded to be safe in any gun orginally chambered in 405. The Hepburn as I'm sure you know was a black powder cartridge designed gun. If you load straight smokeless you should probably take care and sneak up on a load.
The gun is not a FBW but one I designed and built. What you see I made. It was the very first rifle I built and that was about 25 years ago.
It started out inocently enough after several years with a Rem 740.
The first one was a Ruger #3 in 30/40 K followed by a few pleasent years until a 7 mm Rem 1885 showed up. Even though the guns shoots wonderfully I didn't need that big a gun, I still have it. So then I corrected it by the purchase of a 22/250 1885 with a 06 1885 soom after. A 243 Low Wall got in as I didn't think I would get a 260 Rem Low Wall, which came along later. As did an unshot 22/250 and another 06, both 1885s. There was a TC Encore muzzle loader in there.
Want to take one of the 06 1885s and rebore/chamber to 9.3x62 or 9.3x66.
Managed to get a HK SLB2000 in 06 and hunted it this past year. At this point I am just confused.
I'll add my short list as well...I've owned 5 #1s in all, but currently posses 3.
1. A Ruger #1 RSI in 7x57. It only tolerates most of the latest and greatest deer bullets, but loves the plain old 145gr Speer Hot Cor. I'm told I could do a lot worse. The wood, which is almost as important to me, is what I would almost consider knock out.
2. The next is a #1B in .338 Win. Mag. I was ready to sell this rifle, then I drew and elk tag last season. I still decided to possibly move the rifle, but told myself I would shoot an elk with it before I took a low offer at a local gun show. After a couple low offers I scoped it out, loaded some 210gr Paritions and 200gr Ballistic Tips, and shot three, 1/2" groups in a row over the course of two different range sessions. The elk is absolutely delicious, and the rifle remains with me - for now. The wood doesn't have tons of configuration, but it matches perfectly front to back (they all don't do that) which makes it a very nice piece in my eyes.
3. And finally, a Ruger #1 S26M in 30/06. It's a 1968 with a 4-digit serial number and pre-warning barrel for those into that. I'm into the workmanship and how it shoots. The wood to metal fit is the best I've ever seen on a #1 and when you close the lever, it slams down tight. Now jiggles or wiggles here. My first group with 150gr Hornady sps measured 9/16" (I believe with RL 15). IMR 4350 and a 165gr anything shoots very tight groups as well. Fifty nine grains of RL 19 did equally as well as 60grs of that powder with 180gr Partitions - 1" exactly. I split the difference and now 59.5grs. gets me 3/4" every time. Two hundred grain Accubonds are loaded, but I haven't had a chance to shoot them yet. The wood grain was excellent, but a little shiny/slick for my tastes. I had it refinished this past year and now it's a nice satin walnut. Next in mind is to perhaps refinish the barrel to something a little less shiny as well. Maybe a nice color case job to the receiver would look good too.?.?

I have owned a Ruger No 1 Safari in 458WM for 15 years now. That rifle has accounted for over a hundred water buffalo and a lot of wild pigs. It is my favourite rifle. For a big calibre it is surprising accurate and will shoot 100 yard clover leaves as long as I can ignore the recoil off the bench.
I also have another No 1 in 25/06 which has had a harsh life and will soon be re-incarnated as a 25 short mag of some variety.
I do prefer single shot rifles, finding them noce to handle, point and shoot. The ethic of the single shot appeals to me as well.
My hunting buddy just leaned over my shoulder and suggested that a clover leaf group from a 458 was not necessarily much of a group, the unkind so-and-so!
Hunt101 lost the pictures in my original post, so here she is again. Low Wall in .260. Stock has had the factory glossy finish removed and re-finished in an oil type finish. I'm proud of her. She shoots good too...

Here is my recently acquired 1B Hornet that thrives on 40gr. V-max's, 13.5 grs. Lil'Gun and Remington 1/1/2 pistol primers. Feed it anything else and five shot groups grow bigger than an inch at 100. the load is likes has put over 20 five shot groups into less than .85".
Rifles: 1885 Winchester in .218 Mashburn Bee. Double Set Triggers. Another 1885 Win. in .22 K-Hornet. A Ruger #1 Lyman Centenial in .45-70. And finally, a Ballard .32-40 with DST. Muzzleloader: .Custom .50 Hawken. Custom barrel by Wayne Vietz. Wayne is the only man to ever shoot a 250-10C at 200yds with a .25 caliber rifle in competition. The Hawken will scare you at 100yds with round balls!
Just picked up another one a little while ago ( it's still in the mail). Ruger No.3 with custom butt stock, Morgan recoil pad, and the lever changed to accomadate the pistol grip. 30" Badger barrel, Tiger front sight, and rear receiver sight with enough elevation to go past 1,000 yards.
This is going to be fun with BP and cast 500 grainers!! Cat
Custom Browning Low wall in 17 Ackley Bee still at George Wessingers, but I just heard he passed away in May. Not sure if I'll ever see it again.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife sells all my gear for what I said I paid for it.
Don't avoid the 405. It is an absolute blast to shoot, and mine is an absolute drill. I loaded up some 300 gr Barnes X bullets and put three of them through the same hole at 50 metres with open sights. Opened up to 62 calibre and 100% weight retention in fine sand. Tons of fun!

I am in the market for a decent scope, cause my eyes are not getting any clearer either. But this one shoots. And so does my Buffalo Classic 45-70. Half inch groups at 50 metres with irons. How come I had to wait to get to 55 years old to get a couple of really fun guns????

I started hunting with a Ruger 1A 30/06. Sold it to buy something else 20 years ago. Recently bought a K1A 35 whelen and I just picked up my next K1A 7.62x39 pictured below.

How does you Buffalo Classic shoot? Mine is a 45 cal drill.
Quite well actually. With my eyes, I am only good to 100 yards open sites, but at that distance, the gun is very deadly.I refuse to put a scope on a gun like this, looks great the way she is!! Jack.
Your Savage is a "double" shot, not a single shot. But they sure are fun, aren't they. My Brother has a 24F (I think) in 30-30/20 guage and that is a fine firearm.

Sure is nice to see a whole bunch of single shot fans. I have more than my share of single shot rifles . I won't list them here as I have a real problem with listing what and how many I have, anyplace on the internet!
