Very interesting thread (in the way reading ballistics tables is interesting: no pretty prose but a lot of condensed experience).

It proves to me that a few hunters must go back to estimating school, cause I think they do not know how far a yard is. In wooded areas 50-60 yards is a long shot because the trees start to overlap and you can't see the game.

2008- 8pt (eastern) and a doe, 30-06 Sierra 220 gr RN
2009- 2 does, 30-06 150 gr Speer Magtip
2010- 6/8pt (eastern), 45-70 350 gr Hornady RN

All shot within 50 yards

The six pointer this year was the most satisfying of them all. It was the last day of what had been a long disappointing season at 5:00 PM in the fading light. I was hunting a small chunk of mixed timber/ farmland across the road from my house that I had been scouting/ still hunting all morning. Finally, near 4:00 PM leaned up against white pine to sit for the rest of the evening. It was along a rub line that seemed to be active so, I dropped some doe pee along the trail and made a few series of grunt calls. Sure enough, along came this buck completely unaware of me and walk no more than ten feet away checking his rubs and chewing on branches looking around for the interloper. As soon as he quartered away and walked another ten feet I put one in front of his last rib. He took one leap and nosed into the ground. He had one broken tine on his left main beam that still measured 2 1/8" long and a brow tine that was 2" long. I discounted both and called him a six. Nothing huge by any standard but it filled the tag and but some venison in the freezer. Still hunting with the smoke pole and late antlerless starts on the 20th of December.

Seems I've advocated using turrets for long range practice for quite sometime. Seems making shots at 537 yards consistently makes closer shots that much easier. Thinking extending yourself is the the best way to get better.

I also have the ability to put my truck into 4 wheel low, but alas I didn't use that last year either, but it's there.
