Will a 'monte carlo' stock for a tang safety (post-mill) give a drop-in fit for a '59 99 Featherweight action?

I am putting a scope on my 1959 manufacture 99F. I have to raise my head a bit to line up with a scope when one is mounted on this rifle. I'm not fond of the lace on cheek pieces.

The stocks on pre-mil rifles have a drop at comb designed for low mounted iron sights. Post-mil stocks are designed with a higher comb to better line up with a scope, maybe 1/2" higher, (hence the high mounted iron sights.)

Anybody easily put a post-mil stock on a pre-mil action?

Any time I've tried to switch stocks on 99's (especially on pre-1960 hand fitted ones) I've been less than happy. You can try.. but expect at least some fitting to be required. And maybe no luck at all.

I think the measurements are the same tho.

Don't expect drop in fit but the dimensions are the same...

Doesn't take that much practice to get the hang of using a scope on a premil stock. After a bit you don't even think about it, you just naturally place the stock at the proper place on your cheek as you bring it up.

I've had some slight success with my EG.

Edit: Or, if the scope is so high that you cheek is nowhere near touching the stock, maybe lower rings combined with scope with smaller bell?

You are exactly right. Low profile rings make it easy. Not a problem

I will qualify my initial post further; "just deal with it" is not an acceptable alternative.

I mount all scopes in low rings, thus my scopes are 40mm or less obj. Whether you lift your head 0.5" due to poor stock fit, or 1.5" due to mounting a scope in one of Mr. Goldberg's pee-thru devices, it's just, well, wrong. cool

Thanks, Calhoun, the comments on stock swap is what I was expecting.

(This rifle came with a Redfield 'Widefield' scope in old-timey Redfield Jr mounts, about medium height. Too tall...)
