Perhaps .223 Different would be a better name.

I chronograph 4200 fps 33 gr Vmax with regular .223 Rem with short brass life. 4100 fps with long brass life.

The old 1950 designed .222 case head with small rifle primer is good for long brass life at 75 kpsi with custom handloads.

But the .223 Rem is only SAAMI registered at 55,000 psi average peak.

So there is lots of margin left for .223 Ackley advocates to exploit.

Don't try to AI a .270Win. They are registered a 65,000 psi, and that is not much less than the 1889 Mauser case head with large Boxer is good for. No margin for AI advocates to exploit.

If I take my 223 load that does 4200 fps at 77kpsi in Quickload and put the same bullet in 223 Ackley Improved, at 77kpsi it gets 4225 fps.
That is 5% extra powder to get 0.6% extra velocity.

What does it all mean?
Don't let a .223 Ackley Improved advocate tell you he is getting more velocity. The velocity increase is so small it is down in the noise.

Once you get it, I will pay you $200 for it if you want a quick profit! See how easy it is to sell these!

I have done a series of tests on trimming 223.

High pressure and full length sizing with pushing the shoulder back so it will fit in any of my 223s means that it must be trimmed ever firing or every other firing.

With a .223 headspace go gauge, measuring the extra space:
a)Ruger #1V will close, but it is tight = .003"
b) Colt will close on .005", but it is tight = .005"
c) Wilson will close on 0.0065", but it is tight = .0065"
d) Bushmaster will close on 0.008", but it is tight = .008"

For one sizing fits all, I have to push the shoulder back .005".

But neck sizing, like a Lee Collet die, and keeping the brass dedicated to one rifle, I can get 20 high pressure firings without trimming.

Huh. I haven't seen anybody wanting to sell one. Wonder why?

I don't own any 22 centerfires and don't plan on purchasing one as I'm not a praire dog hunter and my 243 is my weapon of choice for fox and coyote. Just curious.

It's the most, for the least and by a landslide.

But I shoot 'em all, which of course only sweetens the 223AI in direct comparison..................
