Yep, but it's illegal to use them for hunting. I've got one for a 30 caliber, fun to shoot, illegal to hunt. Go figure.

Not in all states. I know at least one fella that uses a suppressor on his hunting rifle in TN.

IIRC a couple of years ago there was a thread listing the states where suppressors are legal for hunting. As I remember, the list was suprisingly longer than I would have guessed. IMO, I think it's stupid not to allow them for hunting.

"Quiet muzzle brake" means someone is being somewhat less than truthful.

I think a quite brake is one that does not make it worse than a bare muzzle for the shooter, now people to the sides is another story.

On the other hand I shot a match this week with a Tikka .270. Prone with a low bipod I was spraying gravel on everyone for each shot, never had this happen before cause my rifle (and most on the line) run brakes that direct most of the gas straight up.

The very worse is the brakes that angle baffles back at an angle, yes they are effective but hidious to shoot next to on a line. Put them under a covered line and they are all horrible.

Hunt hard, kill clean, waste nothing and offer no apologies.

Try guiding a dude shooting a .338 Win Mag and then picking granite out of your face after the first shot. Thought I'd been shot with .410 with no. 7. I obviously wasn't paying much attention when we were checking his zero the day before.

Re: Quiet Muzzlebrake what does that mean to you?
CONTRADICTION OF TERMS.

Actually, if you shoot a rifle with a muzzle brake enough times without good hearing protection, eventually it will become quiet...

I made this'un.

It ain't quiet,..but it keeps the muzzle down.

The only problem with that is, it keeps the buttstock "up"

In a .308, those ports shove the muzzle downward so abruptly that the stock jumps up a kicks ya upside the head.

I've since given up on any thoughts of being a muzzle brake mogul.

I agree and you are right. It is 2011 so lets get with the program. Cut that .30 or .338 cal of choice off SHORT, buy an AAC product and attach that Quiet Muzzlebrake. A good can with the correct brake mount QD will reduce recoil much much more than any "quiet" or loud muzzlebrake and save what little hearing you have left.

The only quiet muzzle brake is one that has been removed. They all increase the noise of the report.

Of course a suppressor is a whole other matter, but as others have suggested there is a lack of uniformity from state-to-state as to their legality.

Bristoe,

Thread the holes, then make some screw in plugs with different size holes in them. You could jet it like a carb!

lol,...That barrel is rattling around in a box of parts somewhere.

I thought about putting some corresponding holes 180 degrees from the existingh ones to balance it out, but my days of building FAL's have pretty much ended.

I wouldn't take those numbers at face value. Measuring gun noise is not a trivial task. High quality instruments are needed to capture such a short pulse, and one must know how to correct the readings for the frequencies involved.

The readings he reports are about 115 dB. Most of the lab numbers I've seen for gun noise are about 160 dB.

Perhaps RockyRaab will comment on these numbers for us.

Quiet muzzle break is BS to me.

It's all in what they're being compared to. Compared to a rifle with no brake, there are no quiet brakes; they're all louder than a firearm without a brake. However, not all brakes are created equal. Some brakes, like the clam-shell brakes, are hideously punishing...to everyone. Other brakes are a little less punishing than the clam-shell brakes.
