Federal Premium HIGH ENERGY 30-06 180 grain Nosler Partition
Unfortunately they're not manufacturinbg this load any longer and I don't reload. I've got a stash of a couple hundred rounds that should last for several years if I don't waste them at the range.

125 Nosler Ballistic Tip J/K There is one in every crowd! I've only killed one elk with a .30-06 and that was with 180 grain Winchester PP factory ammunition. I wouldn't hesitate to use any standard 180 grain cup-n-core hunting bullet on elk. The .30-06 has worked too many years to think it will not do the job anymore with standard bullets. That said I've swithched over to Accubonds on a lot of my .30 caliber bullets.

Gary O,
Whatever bullet shoots best out of the gun you're carrying. Put any reasonable bullet in the vitals and the elk will go down. There isn't any magic to killing them at less than 300 yds.
My old partner killed 23 elk in his life. The vast majority of those were with his Rem 722 .308 Win, shooting a variety of bullets.
I've only killed one elk with a .30-06. I shot it with a 150gr Hornady SP. The bullet went through a rib and a lung, and the elk died.

I have a lifetime supply of Jack Carter Trophy Bonded Bearclaws before Federal got ahold of the patent.
180 grain TBB's will be with me on every elk hunt from here on out.

Out of a 30-06 I use a Hornady 180 sp interlock. When I use a 300 mag I use a 180 Accubond.

Based on work at the range, I really like 180 grain Nosler Accubond and Partitions. Both are equally accurate out of my 300 win mag. I currently have it sighted in for Accubonds for an upcoming my first elk hunt later this year, but wouldn't hesitate using Partitions based on the advice of an old Wyoming elk hunting guide and friend.
Start young, hunt hard, and enjoy God's bounty.
