Find yourself a nice pre-lock S&W Model 17 or 18.

Single Six is good. But I found my K-22 for $420.00. They're out there. Just save the cash and standby.

Mine was drilling gophers out to 50yds today. I wish I bought one long ago...

Ruger, S&W, Colt. All are great. Do not pass up a good price on an H&R Mod 999 Sportsman top break. They are a great .22 also, and somewhat akin to a Savage Mod 99 rifle, as they become harder to find.

S&W 617 with a set of Pachmayr grooved grips, and a boxcar load of ammo.

I have a Freedom Arms model 97 Premiere Grade in .22LR and .22Mag.

If you're tired of the obvious, this is the one. Came with a test target of 1/2" 10 shots fired @ 50 yards from a machine rest.

That's accuracy.

Don't own the Colt New Frontier...but I've shot a few and they were great little revolvers. Colt didn't fall to the wayside because their product wasn't up to it. They fell because they cost too much and people were looking for economy. The majority of the .22 Single Action sales went to Ruger and Colt simply discontinued theirs.

Colt handguns have always been overpriced compared to their competition. That's why they struggle to stay in business. Now, they are "cult" status and the only people who buy them do so so that they can say they have a genuine "Colt."

And most, if not all, will never shoot well enough to take advantage of that to justify its $2K+ price tag.

Laughable.

That's a nice little fairy tale, though reality just doesn't quite match the fantasy. The Colt .22 single action was introduced to compete with Ruger. It was and is a revolver of mediocre quality with goofy design features, like that lame-ass crossbolt safety. They were priced competitively with the Single Six, they just weren't as well-made or finished as well as a Single Six. Even now they can be had for $400 to $500 -- right in line with a currently produced and factory supported Single Six.

If i was in the market for a 22 revolver then i would look for a Smith Mod 617 pre lock six shot, another good option if the western style is your thing is the Colt New Frontier 22 , they just don't get any better than these two pistols when it comes to wheel guns in the 22 lr.

Regardless of what you decide on you are going to want a Single Six at some point because it is the standard. That's not to say you might not want an S&W 18, or 17 or even a 63. But you might as well start with the Ruger.

The original Colt 22 SA was the Frontier Scout. IIRC, it came along a bit later than the Ruger Single Six, probably in the mid 50s? Most references say The FS had an anodized aluminum frame, but some were all steel.

Some years ago we had a woman come to our club for an NRA basic pistol course, with an all-steel FS, in the original box w/papers, including the unfired 22 mag cylinder. She resisted any attempts at partin' with it.

A bud had one with the anodized alum. frame and there is a noticeable difference in "finish" hue, between frame and steel components. They are nice little pistols. So are the assorted Ruger SA rimfire revolvers, for that matter.

My favorite rimfire revolver, is the 6" Taurus M96 (six shot cylinder), that I bought new in the mid-80s. It is essentially a K22 clone that cost less than half what the K22 did back then. Still looks as-new after all this time and many thousands of rounds fired. It is still very accurate, with a very good SA trigger pull.

I have a Colt Frontier Scout, Ruger Single Six, and a Smith and Wesson model 18. They are all fine handguns. I'm going to go a different direction here, however. I can't sat that any of them shoot any better, or that the actions are appreciably smoother than the $100 Heritage Arms revolver I picked up last winter. I don't like the safety, and the finish is definitely not of the same quality of the other guns suggested here. For accurate and fun shooting, however, I've yet to find anything better at any price.

Whatever you buy mmake sure that you get click adjustable sights. There is a great deal of power and point-of-inpact difference in 22 ammo: even if you stick to the various long rifle ammoes. I once worked in a shop where the owner would only buy Ruger Single Sixes with the drift adjustable sights.

His reply to me was, "These people are stupid and don't know the difference, and the cheaper ones are easier to sell."

After a while is customers found out, and I think he lost some, and they mistrusted his merchandice - and help.

Bull-f*cking-sh*t. Anyone who would extoll the virtues of the Hi Point of revolvers has judgment about as good as Anthony Weiner's.
