No we didn't stay for the recovery. They sent a team from our camp to do it. If it would have been villagers, like on Dan's hippo, I'd have stayed for the whole thing, and had someone fetch me the Zambezi beer and a safari chair, while I watched. maddog

Guy, Dan and I are both doing Euro mts. of the cow cape buff. Dan is having the hippo tusks mounted on a plaque of the African continent, and possibly a footstool made out of the tanned hippo hide.

Congrats to you both! I think it's awesome that you guys were able to experience that together. Just can't beat that. And with a No.1, no less!

akjeff, the rugers AND the ammo both performed flawlessly. Had it to do over, I would use the same thing. Did pass one area in the Omay, called the Tiger Bay jess. That area was so damned thick, that if I was hunting ele in it, the only thing I'd use would be a dbl. rifle, NOT a bolt or a SS.

You sorry dog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad you and Dan had a great time. I guess I am glad to see the elephant didn't eat you. Recon we could turn a few hippos loose in Tims Ford lake? Great pics and stories. Hope the knee gets better. reflex264

Congratulations on a successful safari. You seem to have filled your dance card nicely. I am looking forward to my first trip to Africa and seeing photos like yours makes my mouth water.

Hunting with your son/daughter is the ultimate. I may never get to go again, but the memory is burned into my mind...... Actually, to tell you the truth, he took me, on this safari. Would'nt trade the memories for anything in the world!!!

Those of us fortunate to have hunting children know the joy that their success brings to us. I am trying to work out a trip in 2013 with my girls. We have enjoyed so much in Canada but I would love to hunt Africa with them.
I appreciate the reports you both have filed.

Bob Mad Dog explains in a "postscript" post that the elephant was injured from a poachers snare. Regardless of the injury the trophy in a tuskless hunt is not the size of the elephant, it is the hunting experience of working in a herd of elephants.

Mike to understand your statement you have to have been there. I was once in the midst of 15 adults and three calves. I was not hunting them and they somehow seemed to sense I was not a threat. It was probably the smell of fear I was giving off. Just standing still as they passed looking at my PH and I was incredibly difficult. To shoot one and experience the herd's anger would ilicit a totally more extreme experience. At that point tusker or not means little.
My hat is off to MadDog I think he has earned his name.
