Have a Model 70 Classic with a 24" tube. Always thought that was about right.

Yup! Thats what I would do. It's surprising how much handier that 2" makes a rifle feel! The gain in ergonomics FAR out weighs the lost fps in my opinion!

A Bolt and Model 70... both at 26 inches...

I've had 24 and 26 inch tubes. I kinda preferred the 26 inch ones, being the rifle was a .300 WinMag and I was chasing velocity.

It never did anything the 24s wouldn't do. Velocities between the two lengths were always "in the neighborhood".

It basically came down to configuring the rifle the way I wanted it. I think that if you want a 24" tube, that's what you should do. If you are happy and confident with a rifle, then that means more than a theoretical 50 or so fps.

I had a Krieger on my old 700 for a time that was cut to 23". Wish I still had the barrel to measure it cause for me it was about perfection for balance.

Have 23" on my 300 WSM today and it's a rock star as well.

For me, it's all about how it feels and balances and I need to take into account the weight of the action, stock, the size of the hole in the tube and then length of tube to get it right.

I've had .300 Winchester Magnums with 22", 24", 25" and 26" barrels, but oddly enough not a 23" barrel. (I say oddly, because several of my other rifles have had 23-inchers.) They all killed stuff, and even the 22" barrel was capable of 3000 fps with 180-grain bullets using published data, which has always seemed to me to be the threshold of .300 magnum performance.

OUCH....You like them long. I'm still trying to get used to the 26" barrel on my new 7mm rem mag... blush I was working on it lastnight and didn't hit it on anything like I did the other day whistle.

I'm one that thinks the 300 WM needs a 24" barrel at a minimum.

Anyone can have a thirty caliber magnum with a carbine barrel. It'll be louder than with a longer barrel and loss 25-30 fps per inch shorter...

So go from 26" too 20" and you'll lose 150 plus fps... And be louder. But maybe not muzzle break louder.

If your shooting out past 300 yards then your trajectory will be altered due to the lower velocities. Inside 250 yards there are not any real issues.

So if your after critters at 400 yards then a 20" 300 Weatherby mat not be your prefered choice
