Not sure if I've ever said this on the campfire, but if I were back east and primarily hunted out of a treestand for whitetails (a supremely pleasant way to hunt IME), I'd never use a SS/Fiberglass rifle... nothing is as much fun while sitting on a stand as holding a beautiful piece of walnut wrapped around chromoly... Then you'd probably like this one in 7-08.

Someone please talk me into a Montana in .204. I don't need a shove, just a small tap will suffice.

This is a show your 84's thread, right? Grin...
I don't have a 204, but it would have to be lots of fun.
My 223 Montucky is easily one of my favorites.
I dumped a big doe today with my Montana 243 with an 80 TTSX at around 300 yards, and it is plenty nice to have such an automatic comfort level among 3 rifles - from 223 to 243 to 7-08.
It was actually not an ideal setup. She and a group of does were leaving and I had to drop into a river bottom and run a few hundred yards and belly crawl up to the field they were crossing. I had to take a quick shot using a little sapling to steady my shot a little - but it was all very quick and natural and pretty automatic. Drilled near shoulder at base of the neck and out behind off shoulder. She never took a step.
I shoot the 223 all the time, and the other 2 are set up pretty much the same - so a little plinker in a Montana to complement whatever else is pretty much a necessity.
You really have little choice about it.
A strong argument could be made that you would be wrong not to get one....grin.

Can anyone fill me in on the problems with fitting the 75 Amaxs in the mag? Im looking at shooting 68 BTHP's in mine but a .435 BC .223 pill is hard to turn down if its do-able....

It all pertains to magazine box confines and throat geometry. In order for the bullet to touch the lands, the cartridge OAL exceeds the confines of the magazine box. Shortening the spacer in the mag box is the easy solution, but will also require some modification to the ejector. A number of people have successfully made the modification.

Another option would be loading the 69gr Lapua Scenar.

Another option would be loading the 69gr Lapua Scenar. The scenar looks like a carbon copy of the Hornady 68 BTHP which is my second choice and will likely run as a target bullet along side a 62 grn TTSX as its hunting partner. Don't know what .223 Scenars are worth, but 6.5's, 308's etc up here in Canada are usually quite a bit more than Hornadys in equal configurations. If the 69 Scenar had something over the BTHP to offer I'd definitely consider it!

Another option would be loading the 69gr Lapua Scenar. Lotsa people using the 75 Max as a deer bullet. Haven't seen any deer kills with the 69 scenar yet, but suppose it could be done?

Here's my Montana in .338 Federal. I bought it used and hunted it for the first time this year. It took this buck at 165 yards with a 185 grain TSX factory load. I think this one has got some mojo...
