This is for sure gonna push me over the edge. My gun money will be replenished by February. I need to add a blue/wood rig to the mix and I'm liking the classic in .243 or 7-08
Huntsman, Nice rifle rack !
Nice looking stock too...you paint it yourself?
Longshot question....Anybody have an extra stock??? I broke the wood on my .243
Well, mine's an 8400, do I get to play? 8mm Short-Fat:
Shot it for the first time this week, just a few rounds to get it roughly sighted in. I honestly thought it was going to be a bit of a handful from the bench, but it wasn't bad. Pretty amazing for such a light rifle shooting 220 grain bullets at a decent clip.

Yeah, after seeing karnis' painting thread a few years back....
.223 (now AI)
toad: How's it shoot?
right now i'm getting sub .75 MOA with ammo from the '.223 bucket' (which is once fired mil brass/60 gr NBTs for case forming). that's probably as good as i can do with a LW rifle on demand.
i still have to mod the mag/bolt stop to make the 75 gr AMax fit.
OK...glad to hear the Big "A" got another one right!
yep. i've yet to see anything less than stellar work from him.

They aren't upside down. They're right side up.
That's a really good looking picture...
Here's a 338 Federal Classic and a Montana in 7mm-08 both wearing Leupy Vari X-III's in 2.5-8X in Leupold mounts.
Awesome pic, good to see some 'character' on the stock!
My one and only, 257 Roberts.
Next two rifles on the wishlist are 84's in 243(or maybe 223) and 270.
That's a really nice rig. For some reason thought you had a Montana in .257? No?
23" 270 84L.

Lookee there. Blew the antlers right off.
I only have one right now...a 260 Montana
Yeah and with a 270 Winchester at that.

Not my 270... here for keeps. Confident about that.
Gonna get another 308 MT though... feeling sore all over without a 308.

Brad, any plans to get one in 223/204?
Brad, any plans to get one in 223/204?
Honestly, no. I think it's too light a rifle for that round and its intended targets. I also think the 308 is borderline too light, even though I love the rifle/round.
I'd rather have a no.2 contour @ 24"... a Standard M700 in 223 would be ideal for me.
But I'm not a varminter anymore...

I'll have to let you know. I was a bit rushed, and a bunch cold. I've spent the last three years in SoCal and apparently I've acclimated to lows of 60 degrees and no rain. The PNW seems a lot more cold than I remember it. And just as wet as I remember it.
.338 Fed:
Some days like this, but I would't be willing to bet on it every day. Full length bedding seemed to improve bench consistency.
From field positions, it consistently puts them close to what you're trying to hit.

Gotta get a better pic of this one, Classic Stainless 7mm-08:
Nice rigs, guys.
Here's a phone pic of a Montucky in .243. I wanted a Montana in 7-08 but couldn't find one for sale. So I bought this in the Classifieds thinking I'd rebarrel to 7-08 with a PacNor 1-9.
She seems to want to shoot. I think I pulled the flier in this 100 yard group. I'm going to try some 80 grain TTSX's soon. If those shoot as well as this 80 grain Federal blue box, I'm going to leave her in .243 and try to find another Montana in 7-08, or a donor.
I need to dig up some pics of my Super America in .223...
She's drop dead gorgeous and shoots great too.

Naive question here, ive never seen one in person. How do the wood stocked Kimbers balance? Are they butt heavy like a Rem Mtn Rifle? Or no? Thanks.
Not at all. Balance beautifully.
Brings a smile every time you grab it!
Best thing about the whole rifle is how it handles.

Pretty much how I feel about my Montana. Thought it might be harder to steady in field positions and that hasn't proven to be true.
Gosh...mines the only 204 in this bunch.
This is actually my brides 84. A 7-08. After she killed a springbok and gemsbok in the Kalahari in western RSA(Apr/May 2011), she let me borrow it! I like it so much, I want one myself. This is the gemsbok I took with it. Really beautiful area, that we'd like to return to. Great little rifles!
Jeff
I also think the 308 is borderline too light, even though I love the rifle/round.
Would you explain why you think it is almost "too light?"
Thanks Mark! Hope you guys are doing well. Coolest part of this trip was Cat taking a liking to hunting. Got me a new pard!
Jeff

Not trying to speak for Mac, but for me if it had a bit more barrel weight it'd be about model perfecto. 21" and .6" at the mzl would be the way I'd do it.

I have Brad's old 308. I think I'll sell that push feed 270 Winlite I bought from Fosteology and get another Montana in 270, or a 84M in 308 for the girl friend, or another Montana in 243 for me.
Does it count if your buck is wearing a furry pink vest?
Sort of like taking a walk on the wild side.

Do the smaller calibers balance noticeably better due to more "meat" in the barrel?

The 84M MT lacks weight (like Mark said, especially in the barrel). The 84L MT has a bit more weight and length that helps settle it down better.
When I get another 84M MT in 308 I'll put a scope in all-steel QR rings and put open sights on it... will add another 1/2 lb and will help it settle down a bit better.
An 84M MT in 308 with scope in QR rings and open sights is what I call a Wilderness Wandering Rifle...
Was pondering the open sight issue myself the other day. Have several other with NECG goodies and want to do the same with my new 7mm-08. I use a patridge front, banded ramp front and single standing rear.
Which are you looking at?

I like the idea of fixed sights. However, I don't think heavier rings, or any weight near the CG will help it settle. The weight of the fixed sight being at the end of the barrel will though. All conjecture of course as I have not tried this. But based on fact that I don't find heavier rifles settling much better than the MT. They do stay more stable during recoil though. Keep us posted on fixed sights on the MT, very interested in that.

Karnis, already have most of it... Leupold 2-7x33LR, Warne all-steel Weaver-style bases, Leupold QRW's, XS Sights 2-screw front base... only thing left to order is an NECG Classic Rear Base.
Will add around 1/2lb which will still bring the Kimber 308 MT in around 6 lbs 12 oz's all-up.
Nice.
I'm thinking about one of these as well-the pop up peep and the NECG barrel band front with the patridge blade. Pricey but I'm only going to do it once.
http://www.brockmansrifles.com/sight_options.asp
Redfield used to sell a one piece base that had a little fold down apeture screwed to the end. Remove the scope and flip it up. If you could locate one for the apeture you could drill and tap the rear Warne base for the sight. I'd use an NECG banded sight with an XS white stripe front blade. You guys got me thinking, now if only my little Montana could be made to shoot....
That would make a very nice rifle Karnis!
I remember those bases very well.
Bed your Montana.

I have one of those bases on my late dad's Win 88(.308). Pretty slick unit.

I live about 3hr from Gradous. I plan to take it to him to have a look at the bore so Kimber can't BS me. From what I've gathered here, that run of 7/08 barrels was junk. Kimber was offering replacements with 308's, and they tend to shoot from what I've read here. I'll just send it back. I picked up a Rem 600 I plan to leave with Gradous as well.

Not if you want it to shoot.
Is it glass bedded (better?)?

The first words out of my mouth when I got my Montana was "that hospital grey schit has gotta go! That grey is freaking terrible. But in a way its Kimber claim to fame.
First time I saw a Montana I thought it looked like some cheap Chinese toy you'd find in Beijing. It has really grown on me to say the least. Can you buy just the factory stock? Not sure I want to mess with the one I have, but it would be cool to try some different looks.

Funny, I'm the opposite. I love the grey... all the splatter and fern jobs, not so much.
Differences make the world go round...
I think the dark grey that they sometimes have looks decent; the light faded gray not so much.
I noticed that there are a lot more picture of Kimbers with dead critters then when we did this same thread with winnies and remmies.
I have one in .30-06 that I like a lot, shoots under 1" just a bit with a variety of loads. However, the finish on the stock was poor- it was a pretty piece of wood with unfilled pores. So, I rubbed some oil in the stock and after a few coats it looks much better- Think I might modify the stock with an ebony fore end cap too...
That is a pretty piece of wood!
Curdog,
I put a coat of Tru-Oil on mine too. It was so bare when I got it I could smell the walnut at arms length, and there's no mistaking the smell of walnut.
Brad, thanks for the comment. It's the nicest one I've seen in person, though some of the ones posted here are at least as nice if not nicer.
The Kimber 84 is a sweet design. It broke my heart when the first two 7-08s didn't group well. I would still rather have a 7-08, but when I saw this one on the rack I was more than willing to "compromise" and get the 308. I suppose it's OK.
That's a nice rifle Redhead! The fact that's it's a .308 makes it all the nicer to me.
Redhead, an awful of of Kimber wood is too blonde for my taste... yours looks about model perfect to my eyes and I love the figure in it.
Not sure if I've ever said this on the campfire, but if I were back east and primarily hunted out of a treestand for whitetails (a supremely pleasant way to hunt IME), I'd never use a SS/Fiberglass rifle... nothing is as much fun while sitting on a stand as holding a beautiful piece of walnut wrapped around chromoly...
The cell phone picture doesn't do it justice. It glistens and changes in the sunlight like a kaleidoscope showing many different colors, sort-of irridescent. It is truly unique. The one coat of Tru-oil darkened it just a bit. I too like darker walnut, although I've seen some pretty blonde stocks too. Every piece of wood is different. That is one reason I like it. Synthetics look OK and are really functional, but pretty walnut really flips my switch.

Then you'd probably like this one in 7-08.

This is a show your 84's thread, right? Grin...
I don't have a 204, but it would have to be lots of fun.
My 223 Montucky is easily one of my favorites.
I dumped a big doe today with my Montana 243 with an 80 TTSX at around 300 yards, and it is plenty nice to have such an automatic comfort level among 3 rifles - from 223 to 243 to 7-08.
It was actually not an ideal setup. She and a group of does were leaving and I had to drop into a river bottom and run a few hundred yards and belly crawl up to the field they were crossing. I had to take a quick shot using a little sapling to steady my shot a little - but it was all very quick and natural and pretty automatic. Drilled near shoulder at base of the neck and out behind off shoulder. She never took a step.
I shoot the 223 all the time, and the other 2 are set up pretty much the same - so a little plinker in a Montana to complement whatever else is pretty much a necessity.
You really have little choice about it.
A strong argument could be made that you would be wrong not to get one....grin.

Can anyone fill me in on the problems with fitting the 75 Amaxs in the mag? Im looking at shooting 68 BTHP's in mine but a .435 BC .223 pill is hard to turn down if its do-able....
It all pertains to magazine box confines and throat geometry. In order for the bullet to touch the lands, the cartridge OAL exceeds the confines of the magazine box. Shortening the spacer in the mag box is the easy solution, but will also require some modification to the ejector. A number of people have successfully made the modification.
Another option would be loading the 69gr Lapua Scenar.
Another option would be loading the 69gr Lapua Scenar.
The scenar looks like a carbon copy of the Hornady 68 BTHP which is my second choice and will likely run as a target bullet along side a 62 grn TTSX as its hunting partner.
Don't know what .223 Scenars are worth, but 6.5's, 308's etc up here in Canada are usually quite a bit more than Hornadys in equal configurations. If the 69 Scenar had something over the BTHP to offer I'd definitely consider it!
Another option would be loading the 69gr Lapua Scenar.
Lotsa people using the 75 Max as a deer bullet. Haven't seen any deer kills with the 69 scenar yet, but suppose it could be done?
Here's my Montana in .338 Federal.
I bought it used and hunted it for the first time this year. It took this buck at 165 yards with a 185 grain TSX factory load.
I think this one has got some mojo...
Good mojo no doubt! I would not get rid of that rifle. Nice buck!
Edit: like the paint job on the rifle too.
Thanks.....Smokepole's paint jobs were the inspiration.
Traded for this one (.270) and just got through throwing a little finish on it.
Dang buddy that looks good, shoots and has great wood. Can't beat that.

Sorta like this:
Thanks. It's my favorite "walking stick" these days.
A few years back some one bought it new on a Tuesday, shot a half a box of shells through it and traded it back in immaculate condition on a Thursday. I fell in love at first sight and paid a bit over half what he had. It was one of my all time best snags. I'm told they don't make SA's in .223 any more.
Nice buck RockChucker30-165 yds in that country how'd you do that? Is the photo taken where the buck dropped or another locale?

Could someone tell me the serial number for models of the Montana made in 2011-12. I just ordered a Montana in .223 and when it gets here I'd like to know the manufacturers date.
The serial number and date of manufacture should be on the box itself.

Thanks! Pics were taken where he dropped. The TSX took him quartering to on the point of the shoulder. Exit was just past the last rib on the off side. He made it about 150 yards, over a fence, and crossed a creek with 10 foot banks before folding. I snaked him back with a block and tackle.
Travis,
Karnis is right. I haven't scene many dated Kimbers more than 6 months old. There is a pretty quick turnaround to the retail market. I had a .204 Montana and it was a shooter but loonyism took over. There will be another by the spring.
The serial number and date of manufacture should be on the box itself.
Tuesday on a short walk.
What's the white stuff on the ground? Washing machine let loose?
Luckily we don't have much of that crap yet!
There was a bunch of geese huddled up river about 300 yards away. Sitting on the ice, looked colder than hell in the wind.
OldRooster's 84M in 7mm-08. Looks like it shots too!
Thanks for posting the pic Karnis. That was the first deer I took with the Kimber.
RockChucker, That's a very cool buck with a lot of character. Congrats!
Nice bear! What was the Montana chambered in and what bullet?

All the .223 montanas my dealer can get were made in 2010. Would you still buy?
Yes. What is the great "mystery" over date of manufacture? The old screw size, 6x48, has long since passed and so have the two position safeties, unless you are buying from a private party.

Oh yeah, that just means it's mo' better! That little dog should get to kill at least 3 ungulates this year... I'll drag it around after a buck, my brother will borrow it if he wants, and I may even shoot both antelope with it
Huntsman-who did the paint job? I do like that rig.
Dober
I'm hoping mine will amass a small truckload of ungulates this fall, as well
The menu includes a bull moose, a bull elk, a black bruin, 1 WT buck and 2 WT does, 1 MD buck and 1-3 MD does. Of course, this is mostly all pending on the successful selection of hunting draws
Plus if my brother or dad feel like using it to hammer an elk or two, they're more than welcome.
Jordan-how touch is it for you to draw a moose tag?
We should here about sheep/moose/goat next week and man oh man would I ever love to pull a tag for old Marvin the Moose. May have to buy a Montana for just such a hunt eh....grin

It really depends on the which zone you apply for, here in AB. I can draw a bull moose tag every year in many of the northern zones, and if a guy wants to be able to hunt moose within 30 minutes of the big cities like Calgary and Edmonton, you've usually gotta wait about 4-5 years. I've never been a big fan of waiting, so I try to make the trip to the north western zones every year. The hunting is better up there, anyway. I won't hear back about all those draws until the middle of July. The next few weeks will be rough. Again, I'm not good at waiting *grin*
I'm thinking a Montana in .308 would be perfect for a sheep/moose combo hunt. You better stick your nose to the ground and start looking for one!
Dang Jord, hope you've got room in the freezer! Grin
Both the deep freezes are about 2/3 full, but I've still got time. I better get the family on a high-protein diet, pronto!
I grew up on a pretty much pure wapiti, deer, and 'lope diet myself
Do you have little ones yourself? If so, hunting yet?
BigSky 270WSM, sorry it's not an 84
I like that a bunch. I might give mine a similiar treatment.
It doesn't get much better than that!
Yeah, I have a 2.5 year old little guy, and an 8 month old baby girl. The 2.5 year old doesn't have the stamina to go out hunting, yet, but you can't convince him that guns and hunting aren't the coolest things in the world!
My little girl JUST starting eating solid foods, and most of the time she won't eat baby food, but she will sure pack down the venison steaks (cooked medium-well :P )!
Every time we see a deer or moose, my boy says "Deer.....we shoot it...", or "moose....made of meat". Cracks me up every time
The white webbing gives it a bit more texture too, which I really like. I haven't even clear coated it and probably never will because it's holding up so well.

It does look pretty friggin' good, don't it?!
Jordan, that's awesome man! I didn't know you had babies, that is freaking cool. I was about 3 when I first started getting dragged along for 'lope hunts, but I'd just kinda' sit in the truck and eat skittles and watch Dad shoot stuff! That pic you saw when I was just a youngster, I believe I was 4, maybe 5. He's almost there!
How fars north Jordan? Can a non rez do moose without a guide?
Lil Sky 308, I don't know I do have some standards...
Dober
Yeah, he's getting close! I'm thinking another year, or two at the most, and he'll be ready for his first day hunt!
You could do like Dober did with his G-Son and stick him in a pack... He'd be riding in style. That would be a total hoot! That seems to be the stuff memories are made of.
Wish I could Karnis, but i'm a photobucket ideit too.

Hey Dober,
Well, I live about 3-3.5 hours from the Montana border, and you need to drive about 4-6 hours north of where I live in order to get drawn every year. The good stuff starts around the latitudinal centre of the province, and gets better as you go north.
The moose hunting thing is a bit complicated. A non-res alien (referring to non-res, non-Canadian hunters) must hunt big game under either a guide/outfitter, or else a hunter host. If hunting with a hunter host (usually a friend or relative), the non-res hunter may hunt only certain species, and may not hunt game in a zone where the license is obtained through a draw. I just had a quick look, and didn't see any rifle seasons that are non-draw, but plenty of bow seasons. I'd have to call in to clarify, because the regs state that a non-res alien can hunt moose with a hunter host. Let me know if you want me to find out for you
Thinking your standards might go up after you start using Kimber Montanas more seriously
Yup, that's what I'm talking about!
Dober, that is the all time #1 pic in my book! A guy can't help but smile seeing the little guy stuffed in the pack!
Thx Tanner,
now back to the Montana thread. Perhaps I should break down and buy a Lil Sky for the Dude to grow into. What do you think Jordo, a good idea or no...grin
Dober
I'm thinking Lil Sky 7/08 and 120 TTSX for The Dude, let him pick the Krylon colors
Awesome picture. That boy loves you.
Dober,
I'd say that's a risky proposition. You might end up selling off all your Win 70's once you get comfortable with a Montana or 3
Id say lil sky 243....you cant say no to that kinda killing power in such a user friendly (recoil) package for the dude.
Yeah, that was my thought too. 7-08 might be a bit much when he's younger. Of course, I've not shot anything but 140s from my 7-08 (a 700).

How about a .257 Bob?
KDK: What is a 700?
A few years ago when it was a .308; now it's a 7-08:

What an AWESOME photo!
Are 8400's invited? My Pac-Nor 7 WSM.

Wow. Great looking grain on that one. Seems like the selects are hit or miss on grain, which prevents me from ordering one. If I run across one like this one, it will follow me home.
I'll pay along. My kid's rifles.

Deland & Vacrt, sweet wood-stocked rifles!
Fence post 243 from Friday.
I am jealous of youse guys wood!
You gotta admit, there is exceptional wood on this thread.
Not the best pic, this is my rebarrel on an 84m went from a 338 Fed to a 260AI.
While I've had Montanas in 308 and 7-08 go thru here they never seem to hang around long.
Here's one I have currently....no plans for it,,..maybe I'll shoot it in the spring if spring ever comes.
NIB 338 Federal
Actually it's my 9yo boy's rifle but Dad will use it too!
This is a very nice heavy barrel KoO M84. This is no lightweight like my 6x47 KoO M84.
24" heavy contour barrel with a sweet trigger pull which measures in ounces.
It must be a Custom Classic model as it has inletted sling swivels, nice wood and a perfectly fitted Neidner buttplate.
I like it a whole lot and can't wait until my boy gets to shoot a deer with it. The 45gr. TSX and the 40gr Cutting Edge Bullets FBHP projectiles will do the deed with aplomb.
Probably scoping it with a 3-9x40 VX-2 or a 2.5-8x36 VX-3 in original KoO rings.
I kind of hope I never run across one of these on a shelf anywhere as I'm guessing the CC won't like it at all.

I bought that one used off gunbroker. The kicker is it shoots as good or better than it looks. Dad did the load work for me, I think he tried 4 or 5 powders and 4 or 5 bullets up to 75 to 100 grain, and it shot every one under an inch or better. I know on a Kimber thread that isn't great, not a large enough sample, not enough range, not enough something, but on a Winchester or Remington thread that's 1st rate, best production rifle going, can't get any better than that, thats why I only buy Remchester, etc, etc, etc.
243WIN....Believer has this one now..
7-08 Classic
and a 17 Rem. Montana
Better than a fence post
7-08
This tasted a whole lot better than a fence post, too...
